I only roast in 220g lots - that seems to suit our usage pattern. Nice to know it can go that high if I need to roast more.

With all the roasts we have done, there has been hardly any chaff produced at all.

I like how simple this unit is to use. I also like how repeatable each roast is for the same beans.

Have you experienced any alignment problems with the roasting chamber and is there any cooling issues that we need to know about !!... :-[

The only alignment issues I have had, is that you need to make sure the "lid" of the drum is properly down, otherwise it wont go in. Because the lid doesnt clamp in place, it just rests on top - just a matter of making sure it is pushed down (I am making it sound more complicated than it is) - its just an awareness thing.

As for cooling issues - I suspect some people wont be happy with the speed of cooling - but its not really a problem for us. It is easy enough to adjust your roast times to compensate.

As with any roasting method, I think it is a matter of building up your experience with the machine, and adjusting your roast to what delivers the best taste for you.

The machine suits my style of roasting - I am not really one to stand there watching and tracking every second of the roast; and it has enough buttons and gadgets and sparkly bits to keep me happy.

Spot on Myrtle- I second all of your comments. Also, the option of a quicker cool for any who feel that its an issue is no problem at all. A big bucket, ceiling fan and a colander and youre in business! . I have tried both cooling methods and have reverted to letting the machine do its thing.

I picked up my Gene Cafe from Serge @ Go Barista on Saturday. This has to be the best engineered household appliance I have ever layed eyes on, a veritable thing of beauty.

In the flesh it was definately larger than I expected. Serge fired it up with 200g of his Blend A which happens to be teasing me from the back of the cupboard as we speak - patience, patience, I know, I know!

I roasted two 300g batches this afternoon, the first under the rangehood, the second in the backyard! Yes, as ingeneous as the chaff collector is on this machine as a wise man said on an earlier post - roasting is still an outdoor sport - It was nice to finally meet the neighbours anyhow, once their fears of incineration were allayed! ;D

Someone commented earlier on the mesmerizing effect of the off-axis rotation, theyre not wrong, I no longer need a fishtank, another justification for the outlay for those of you trying to swing it with their respective Finance Ministers. Which brings me to the only hiccup I had with the purchase, which was trying to shuffle the Mrs outside into the car before the Gene Cafe laid waste to my VISA!

All jokes aside, if you are even slightly contemplating purchasing this machine all I can say is this is one purchase you will never regret. Its not often that a highly anticipated purchase lives up to all its expectations, but believe me this one does or has for me at least. Its controls are intuitive and its tweakability during the roast is impressive.

It was great to finally meet Serge (not many snobs on the Gold Coast!) who took time out to meet me on a Saturday - thanks again for the demo, coffee and chat, very informative! No excuses people, get down to Go Barista, Talk Coffee, Sibonis et al and lay waste to your plastic! You only live once, just do it!

kai viti - well said - I have to agree that I havent regretted my GC purchase.

MZ - price wasnt a factor for me. Being an engineering type - the off axis rotation also sucked me in. For reasons long since forgotten the hottop has never appealed.
