Re: Gene Café with PID Program Control

    Hi MZ,

    Excellent work!

Where did you get the parts from? Also, do you have more detailed modification instructions?

    Thanks

      Hey smaca,

I purchased the PID from the US, it actually worked out cheaper, I can PM you with more details on that. Relays from local electronics store. As for the circuit, sorry trade secret !.

Re: Gene Café with PID Program Control

" Do you have a drying cycle in your profile, if so what are your thoughts. Im getting great results with 150 deg"

As it happens, Ive been thinking for a while about the usefulness of having a
slow buildup at the start of a roast, for some beans. So I was interested to see
a recent post on home-barista.com by Jim Schulman of Coffee Cuppers, which
basically says that its important to have an approx four minute drying phase
bringing the temp up to 150C, then (usually) fairly quickly to first crack, moving
slowly through first crack, then controlling time to end of roast / second crack
              depending on desired flavours.

Id conclude from that that a slow drying phase is good for all beans, not just some.
So Im adjusting all my profiles to have some time programmed at 160, the iRs
lowest temp. Unfortunately the thing has its own ideas about how to behave at
lower temps, and although my program wil keep the temp down a bit, Im usually
measuring 160C at 2 mins and about 195 at 4 mins. On the positive side, colour
is usually very even, and its possible to get good control of the later stages.
              I guess it needs a PID ....

Do you have any comment on cupping, with and without the drying stage?

PS the abovementioned post is the second in this thread:

                Modified GC Update

My Modified GC has preformed flawlessly and accurately. Plots are revealing a temperature difference between set values of no more than .8 deg; at an ambient temperature difference of 6 deg, also It hasn’t been necessary to stop any roast manually.

It appears my Modified GC’s magic number, is somewhere between 230 deg & 234 deg.

Profile 1 has been updated. Extended roast time by 2 minutes, and lowered target temperature by 3 deg. See plot for more details.

                Enjoy!

                MZ.

                  Second installment here soon.

Modified GC with PID Program Control takes a step closer towards “Robe de Moine”.

                  Add On

2 Stage Exhaust System with soft start / D.O.L starting & count up or count down roast timer.

Sorry for the delay, preparing the document was more challenging than the actual project; the document is brief and scaled down...

The complete system is running smoothly, hopefully I can get down to some serious roasting, unless I come up with a third installment!
