Re: Gene Café with PID Program Control

Please read this information contained within

      http://coffeetime.wikidot.com/gene-cafe-dimmer-control-modification

This is the mod I did. I bought all products from the UK as to spec as described within.

It works great and is totally reversible, oh and it is very easy. It is as simple as in plugging 2 wires and reconnecting them to the dimmer.

Re: Gene Café with PID Program Control

I also did this mod, following the coffeetime link as given by Brew Time (and using the dimmer specified, from the UK).

I agree, it is well worth doing.

At the time I put some pictures and comments in my gallery:
           https://picasaweb.google.com/haazbean/GeneCafeDimmerMod

Note the comments re heatsinking -- the dimmer did behave erratically at first, but was fine with upgraded heatsinking (as is recommended in the coffeetime article).

Its easy to do, but you do need to build a box for the dimmer and bypass switch. I used some basic items from Aztronics, as mentioned in my comments.

        Have fun!

Re: Gene Café with PID Program Control

Im also about to make the mod. For simplicity Ive ordered the dimmer, the 10a switch and the two pattress boxes from the web address noted in the Stage One article in Equipment Required.

All up cost, at yesterdays exchange rate, A$59.27

Re: Gene Café with PID Program Control

            Greetings From New York.
            Im a new Gene owner.
Anyone using a linux base controller?
Im thinking adding thermocouple to the drum and variable airflow.
For those having gone near there before me any ideas?
            Thanks
            Enjoy

Re: Gene Café with PID Program Control

Sorry for the long delay but here it is. This mod allows you adjust the input to the heat source. I made a world of difference to my roast. It is a simple mod which is 100% reversible as all you need to do is disconnect 1 wire and connect it to the dimmer and the other onto the circuit board in the Gene.

The procedure with step by step instructions can be found on the internet with a parts list.
