drum roasters do have air flowing through them which carries off the chaff and the smoke.... so they would only have a relatively small amount of contact with any smoke - little absorption. Even when pan roasting the hot smoky air rises up and away from the beans.
A recycling fluid bed roaster would be bathing the beans with very smoky air for a significant portion of the roast.... and would, Im sure, impart that flavour to the beans.
But using gas as the heat source.... you shouldnt need to recycle the heated air.
