  • How hot is your Gene Cafe?

I am interested in how much variability there is between individual roasters and what could be considered "normal". One simple test is to set an empty machine to 250 degrees and see how long it takes to reach that temperature. Obvioulsy the starting temp of the machine has a small impact on this and the ambient air temperature. Could GC owners post their 250 degree times and their start temp?

    TIA,

    Chris

        ambient temp = 21*, exactly 10mins

Mine took 10 mins 5 sec, starting around 20degrees.

The normal time is between 7 mins 30 sec and 8 mins 30 sec

Avoid plugging several power plugs on an outlet at the same time.

The air ambient will affect this result, do not use it outdoors.

Make sure your shaff collector is very clean

            keep the safety cover closed

All the best and if you have any concern please PM me.

I checked mine this morning - it took exactly 8 mins to reach 250 deg.
This was with ambient temp of 22 deg.

hmm mine sounds a little slow. Ill give it another go when its a bit warmer.

                  Hi all
Last night mine took 11.5 mins to get to 250 C.
Ambient temperature was 14.5 degrees as it was cold in my garage at night.

It does seem that there is some variability between machines. Some of this could be due to different voltage supplies. When I was researching the GC I found some posts from people overseas who had imported the GC from the UK (240 volts) and were having problems with their 220 volt supplies. Some people were using a device called a Triac to boost their supply voltage. Most electrical equipment is fairly forgiving but in this situation the heat output is proportional to the voltage. I think the Australian supply voltage can be anywhere between 220 and 260 volts.

I dont think any of this matters that much as long as the GC can reach roasting temperatures in a reasonable time and does so repeatably - ultimately the roast times you use may not be exactly the same as other users but you fine tune the temp/time for your own machines performance. The heater unit I replaced would not get much above 220 degrees and was clearly not within specification but I suspect all the times quoted above are typical of real world performance. I dont think we should expect them to all the same.

I tested mine this morning on the patio: About 12 degrees ambient.
                      9.5 minutes to 250C

                        Hi all

What this does mean though is that peoples roast recipes for one Gene will need to be adjusted for ones own Gene. Looks like there is a range of about 9 mins to 13 mins to heat up to operating temperature. If one has a recipe that says 240C x 15 mins then a "9 min heater" will roast the beans at 240 for 6 mins and a slower "13 min heater" will roast them for 2 mins at 240 C - thats a whopping difference.

I realise that a "recipe" is just a starting point for ones own experimentation but it does make comparisons between machines problematic.

You are very right Mike but the best way to roast isnt it you keen eyes

                            Hi All
about 11 minutes on a cold Blue Mountains morning in a brick garage!
                            Slow but it works

                              Ambient temp 20deg.
Temp kept going up till 249 at about 7 mins 30 , then goes down 3 or 4 deg and then back up to 249 ,which would be the thermostat cutting in and out.
