This looks like what I want to build!  Thinking of using an old 4.5kg gas bottle cut up as the inner drum.
I have just started building a bbq based roaster at home, the thought of using a gas bottle crossed my mind a few times, but decided against it, as they have been used to hold a poisonous substance.

Im now trying to build a cooler with a box fan.

    Any tips?

An exhaust fan is more versatile

Hey there, yeah im doing 1.25kg batches, it soles 20% of mass to net 1kg +-30-40g, so its pretty good. I have yet to gear up the output so i can possibly do larger batches, at the moment it is not fast enough to keep more beans moving enough.

I have a aluminium trier, which i poke in to get a visual sample for nearer the end of the roast.

what kind of electric circuit do you mean? what would it control?

    Cheers, Mark

Excellent design, I like it. Now only if you could hook it up to an electric circuit for a more controlled roast..

Also judging by the pictures (I cant see it on them) where can you actually see through the drum to the beans?

As for controling the Roast, I just turn the gas knobs on the bbq, depending on what my multimeter thermocouple is telling me. turning temp down befor first crack and second, and keeping the gradient steady the way up.

Gday, sorry for the absence... too much drinking coffee, not enough snobbing coffee...

I havent managed to get a profiler yet, but a few land marks which I go for is
    5-6min 100C
10-12min 175C (first crack, I lower the gas and sit the temp here for about 2min)
15-17min 200c (second crack starting, I lower the gas and let the temp sit hsit here for a min or two)

then put gas up high again till the end, stopping it when I feel like it around 18-21min. (longer roasts are working well at the mome.

Yes, the gear box takes all the weight. does A mighty good job too! its very tough. from and old carpet machine, dont know how many are lying around...

And I have a desk top fan with a vacuum cleaning pipe suckking air from the roaster for air flow.

    Cheers, Mark

Hi, I think this is a great looking roaster. Im thinking of trying to make something similar. A couple of questions!

    1. What do you have supporting the drum? It looks like you have all the weight hanging on the gearbox?

    2. When you say sucking air through, how have you acheived that?

    Thanks!

    Damian.

Mate - very flash - have you got a roast profile from the DMM that you could post up to let us all see how it profiles...? Also how do you control the roast, particularly from bean to bean.

    Cheers

Kicking off a Boutique Roastery there Macho? Looking very professional indeed... 8-)

    Mal.
Lol cheers Mal, :P I am selling to friends and family, just a few kilos a week, but I emphasize that I come here as a like minded coffee snob who just wants to improve what he drinks with breakfast with this fanstastic resource here, as a contributer as well as benifactor of information.

Happy to answer any questions about my roaster.

At the moment Im taking my roasters to the first crack (175 C) at around 10 min, sit around there for 2-3 min, then ramp up the heat to reach 200 C at about 15 min-16 min, sit there another 2 min, then increase the heat and stop it when it looks like the right colour.
