That is one beautiful home roaster Dennis, you are a lucky man! With 4 pages of reply posts in 4 days, you sure know how to attract some attention from the CSers. 8-)

I would be more than happy to "baby sit" your current setup when the new baby arrives mate. ;D (http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1191921790)

Re: Diedrich Infra Red 3kg Roaster

Hi Dennis, I have an IR12 as you probably already know. I thought Id share a few observations.
Minimum batch sizes are up to you. I have roasted 250gm samples in the 12Kg when Ive needed to. The only thing that you have to be careful of is airflow, because the Diedrichs roast with alot of airflow compared to other drums the smaller batches are affected more dramitically with the extra air in the drum. But it is possible. When I started I roasting lots of half batches, I wish I hadnt. The profile of the beans is soo much better when roasting full capacity. However, I still roast lots of batches down to half load. You will find that roasting full capacity produces alot better result. I roast a couple of larger arabica beans full capacity with no problem, Diedrich take that into account when designing the drums.

Roasters are a funny thing. The operater is still the most important part of the chain. You find that your style will develope in harmony with the characteristics of the roaster you have. When I started on the Diedrich my stlye changed heaps, and the coffees I roast now are very different to what I was doing on the Probat. Not to say either are better or worse, but I do love the Diedrich.

If you would like to discuss anything please feel free to, Im always happy to talk shop.

Re: Diedrich Infra Red 3kg Roaster

Thanks for your insight Pioneer - I must admit that I was a bit dubious when the answer to my question about optimum batch size was answered with, "the size of the roaster you have - 3kg".

Will definitely take your advice and sure Ill be talking to you in the not so distant future!
