Re: Gene Cafe Hard to Hear FC and SC

I did another roast last night with some Kenya AA - used Chris recommended setting of 19min @228.

I got to FC around 13.30 which I still found very soft and battled to hear. Did not hear second crack. Stopped roast at 20 (i upped it for an extra minute). Also did it outside at night which did not help with colour. But beans looked ok this morning.

Will have to try Lizzis profiles and get a hearing aid.

Can anyone recommend any beans with really loud SCs?

LOL :... i have used both a stethoscope and a small "microphone/hearing-aid with earplugs attached" to see if i could pick up SC easier...it does help, but it sure looks silly, listening for signs of life on the chaff collector!!! ;D ;D

Put your ear closer to the chaff collector. Second crack is harder to distinguish amongst all that noise. It sounds like very softly ruffled aluminium foil. First crack sounds like pop corn popping.

OK, I dont have a Gene (yet!). But Hazbean and I roasted 230g of Harrar in his last evening. He was crouched at the chaff collector listening intently. I was sitting in a chair watching the overly hypnotic eccentric drum rotation....

I didnt have any trouble hearing either FC or SC. It was very muted, compared with the PIDd popper, but it was pretty clear to me. Curiously, as I leaned in to listen - it got harder to hear. So maybe kick back and relax - you might be in a better position to hear it?

Not terribly scientific, I know - basing this on exactly one GC roast, but I was struck by how the (quiet) extraneous GC noise dominated the FC sounds as I leaned in... Just a thought!

            Cheers
            /Kevin

              Hmm Interesting suggestions.
I just battle to hear over the tumbling beans and the fan.

I like the sit back and relax option the most.

Try the sample roaster at Veneziano...its fluid bed roaster....or hot air roaster which roasts 4 times as much as the Gene Cafe. I sometimes confuse 2nd crack with the sound of the beans hitting the pyrex roasting chamber. I need to really keep my eye on the stop watch and put my ear really close to the roaster.

                  Coffee Kid,

I wash my drum after every use, and that includes the chaff collector. I think I do it because I dont want the taste of one bean to mingle with another bean that I roast after it. Again I am unsure if this affects the taste...and I am a little fastidious with it being clean. :-[

                  Ben,

Every bean is different in the GC, although I will admit the Dominican Barahona AAA is very loud when it goes into FC, and SC is quite audible aswell.
