I reckon the 9v battery didnt have enough grunt to drive the motor.

Ok,..thanks JavaB... Ill race around now and see if I can find a suitable one. I have heaps of them in the garage and kitchen drawer.

Ok,. I have a tonne that are too small.. and these; (so far.. bound to be more around)

          As written on them...... 12V DC 400mA .... 18V DC 200mA ... DC24V 0.8A

So is it possible to use larger than 12V?

If you use more than 14.7V..... the motor will turn more and more quickly as the voltage increases.....

Eventually it wont turn any more if the voltage gets too high ..... the motor will burn out!

Dont exceed 14.7V...... you can reduce it to maybe 10V (little slower) but would still be OK.

Oh sorry,.. missed the bit in your last post "to say 14.7V DC on the label etc"

Ok.. will stick with the 12V. Do you think the 12V DC 400mA one ok to use? Im just not sure whether the 400mA has anything to do with amps.

Unfortunately it does..... mA is 1/1000 of an amp..... so that unit will only supply 0.4A...... which is almost certainly not enough.

It might work for a short time and the power supply would then overheat and die......

You need a pretty powerful supply for these motors..... read it will be pretty large!!

Trying to get the bits required to get one of these to work isnt easy unless you have quite a bit of electrical and mechanical knowledge...... thats why the Corretto is such a great idea for most people as it is all in one..... and works straight away!

By the time you finish Remy, it should look like this...

Sorry - the devil made me do it! :

Re: Please help me build my new roaster.

Id be looking for a transformer to supply at least 1 amp at 12V DC.

The computer powersupply (PS) idea is a good one, did the same myself to provide power for a computer steering wheel & pedals.

As mentioned, you need to see at least 1A at 12V (ie. 1000mA) quoted for the output of the transformer or power supply. The motor shouldnt be under much load for your project, but unsure what the final amperage draw would be. You could test the current draw by mocking it up with a car battery, unless you have to fork out for a transformer I reckon Id just give it a try with what you have.

Seeing as you have some old computers around, Id pull a PS out & using a multimeter test the output wires until you find two that supply 12-14V DC. The PS usually supplies a number of voltages, you need to find the right output wires for what you want. If youre really lucky it will tell you on the casing which wires give you what voltages & amperages. DONT open the actual casing of the PS itself.

If the PS does the job, Id look to putting it into some sort of case for a safer setup.

                        Cheers......................Sean

You could try a motor cycle battery or a cheap car battery but have a switch in the power line so you can turn it on and off without sparks. A fuse would also be handy (I would recommend about 10 amp. Once you have worked out positive and negative it shouldnt be to hard ;D ;D ;D

Is purchasing a power supply out of the equation?

Its a wiper motor from a car.
Which to me, means it is DC.
A car battery should power it.
Therefore, a car battery charger should also power it.
I purchased mine for under $40 from K-mart, hooked it up to the motor and it worked immediately.

There are cheaper chargers out there too. I just figured Id buy a half decent one in case I actually needed to charge a car battery with it. Hasnt come to that in the last 4 years.

I am possibly the LEAST handy person contributing to this discussion, but I find the whole thing works a treat for me using the battery charger.
