Re: Please help me build my new roaster.

Well at least your keyboard is fixed!! ;D ;D

Getting the motor to run will be only half the problem by the way Remy..... As this is off a rear window, the odds are that the shaft from the motor is designed to move the wiper blade back and forth..... so it will need to be modified so that it rotates in the same direction constantly......

There is often an extra shaft which might be usable.... but bit hard to say!!

Life wasnt meant to be easy..... but why is it so bl...y hard some times??????

oooh... a car battery charger hey?? would that be a square orange box thingy that I have seen in the garage I wonder... hmmmm. off to have a look well after I get back from taxiing my daughter to dance class and back. About 90mins

Re: Please help me build my new roaster.

I scrounged through all my saved bits and pieces and finally found that
1 amp is what I found was needed for my motor. (Scooter beat me too it).

It was just an old power supply from a portable phone or answering machine or something.

Remy are there any "Reverse Garbage" type places nearby?
I was at the local one last week and they had dozens and dozens of them in boxes.
        I found a 12v 1 amp one in seconds.
I cant imagine theyd have been more than a couple of dollars.

I would of thought the wiper motor would run on an ecentric set up so that the motor turns in 1 direction but as it goes around the ecentric it comes back the other way?

            marty,

True.... but on the rear wiper motors Ive seen the eccentric is built into the housing and the wiper attaches directly to the shaft which comes out of the housing (generally not the case with front wipers!)

Looks like its time to do some surgery on that wiper motor. The silver bit needs to be removed or at least opened so you can see whats going on inside.

Is purchasing a power supply out of the equation?

Its a wiper motor from a car.
Which to me, means it is DC.
A car battery should power it.
Therefore, a car battery charger should also power it.
I purchased mine for under $40 from K-mart, hooked it up to the motor and it worked immediately.

There are cheaper chargers out there too. I just figured Id buy a half decent one in case I actually needed to charge a car battery with it. Hasnt come to that in the last 4 years.

I am possibly the LEAST handy person contributing to this discussion, but I find the whole thing works a treat for me using the battery charger.

Id be looking for a transformer to supply at least 1 amp at 12V DC.

The computer powersupply (PS) idea is a good one, did the same myself to provide power for a computer steering wheel & pedals.

As mentioned, you need to see at least 1A at 12V (ie. 1000mA) quoted for the output of the transformer or power supply. The motor shouldnt be under much load for your project, but unsure what the final amperage draw would be. You could test the current draw by mocking it up with a car battery, unless you have to fork out for a transformer I reckon Id just give it a try with what you have.

Seeing as you have some old computers around, Id pull a PS out & using a multimeter test the output wires until you find two that supply 12-14V DC. The PS usually supplies a number of voltages, you need to find the right output wires for what you want. If youre really lucky it will tell you on the casing which wires give you what voltages & amperages. DONT open the actual casing of the PS itself.

If the PS does the job, Id look to putting it into some sort of case for a safer setup.
                  Cheers......................Sean
                  Purchasing a power supply is not totally out of the equation (just a last resort atm),..  trying to keep the costs down to a minimun and blew that on a powerless motor,lol  costs are mounting.. and dont want to spend more than the cost of a Gene :}

Ok,..I have a few options it seems,.. first... would love to keep this small and for that reason will chase the 12V DC 1A(ish) first... but failing this....

Im 99% sure I have a car battery charger here somewhere,..but couldnt find it in the garage tonight,..I may have loaned it to my sister a few years ago me thinks. Hey K,.. if youre reading this,.. have you got my charger??  ;D  :P

I also have this from one of my dead PCs, (twas already open...will use if I have no other options, cos I had hopes for bringing this PC back to life eventually)

Will open up another dead PC tomorrow which is a much older one... and would definitely use the PS in that one if it was suitable.

Does this PS look suitable tho?  10A

                    Remy,

Yep, the 12V supply from an old computer Power Supply would be fine......

But before you invest too much time with that motor..... maybe a couple of wires from your car battery..... and see if it works.... and if it goes to and fro (like a windscreen wiper) or round and round (like a bean stirrer)......

I hope Im wrong...... but Ill put my money on to and fro :P

Yes,.. will give them a call in the morning. It is only about 10-15mins drive away. Good thinking. Thanks. Ive got about 2 dozen ++ of these transformers here,..but most of them are tiny V. grrrrrr typical.

If it does to and fro it will be a matter of removing the motor from the gearbox.
