Ok,..got the power supply sorted. Pulled this out of the other dead PC. Looks good... *decides to plug it in and test to see if fan works* argh nope,.. the fan is not going . Does this mean its cactus,.. or is it possible the fan was getting its power via the motherboard?

Assuming it is still ok,.. Ill go back to 22as post Page 4, #52 and re-read in the hope that I can sort out which wires to use. And erm... what do I do with the rest of the tangled mess. Terminate them? It would be a bit scary having that bundle of wires hanging around all the time.

Re: Please help me build my new roaster.

        Hi Remy,

In all likelyhood the power supply is OK. Being a switching PSU it needs a load connected in order to start up. Just grab a hard drive or cd drive from the dead PC and connect it to the PSU and, if the PSU is Ok, it will start up. There may also be an on / off switch located near the power socket.

You can then measure the voltages on the individual wires.

If the PSU is a gonner, go down to your local small PC shop (they are everywhere in the burbs) and you can get one new for about 35 bux. At Dick Smiths or Hardley Normals you would expect to spend substantially more.

The PC shop is also a source of wiring harnesses with plugs and sockets that fit those on the power suppy so you can make quick extension cables.

Finally, all wires external to the PSU are low voltage so you wont even get a tingle if you touch them. I would not bother terminating any wires - they are quite happy left unplugged.
Inside the box, the voltages are lethal - so dont go there at all.

Let us all know how you get on,

        cheers Jeff

Re: Please help me build my new roaster.

Thanks Jeff, no luck yet,. plug in with HD connected,.. then CD drive, no life. Plug in the PSU that is still in the first machine and fully connected and that too did not come on,.. neither of these computers do I recall that they just stopped working,.. one was just superceded and the other ones HD died,.. so I just dont know whats going on with them.

I have a battery tester which will test up to 22.5v and has a 12V point that I switched to,.. then with probes went right through the wires twice on the PSU that I pulled right out and got nothing. The tester works.. tried it on a regular battery. Havent tried any wires on the PSU of the PC that I was not really wanting to gut as I was hoping to bring this one back to life.

Re: Please help me build my new roaster.

            Hi again Remy
When my power supply failed on my computer router I could not find the correct voltage 4.5 V
So I went to Jaycar and purchased a variable power supply I think that it cost $16.95 but it was 1 year ago

See photo this unit goes to 12V some go to 24V
It may work ?? , someone here may confirm if it will
            Its easy and cheap

Thanks KK. Does it say DC on it anywhere and any Amp info??

If its an ATX power supply, I dont think its quite that easy. Therell be a green wire (power on/off) which I think needs to be connected to ground (black), and I think some power supplies also have a "voltage sense" wire that needs to be connected to one of the 3.3 or 5v wires. Theres articles on the net on how to do it - try Google.

Re: Please help me build my new roaster.

OK,...just came back from another trip to the recycle place here, after ringing first to make sure it was a worthwhile trip : "yeah we have a whole box full" :-? > > . This time was for a DC12V 1A transformer... of which they had 5 and 3 being mobile chargers *sigh* other two no good either.

Took my wiper motor with me (so it wasnt a total waste of time) because the wreckers was close by. Asked mechanic if he could put power to it for me,.. it worked fine, but yes it oscillates as was expected (being a rear wiper motor),.....so I thought hmmmm need to open back then... to mess with gears and cant,.. so I asked the mechanic if he could loosen the screws for me (if he couldnt I was going to ask to swap for another one that can be opened) and after some struggling and the use of a lock wrench(why didnt I think of that) he managed to loosen all of them whoot! So now I am about to open it up and have a play.

Right...thats it...throwing the PSU idea into the too hard basket now.. it has just gotten more and more complicated. Will try and find a suitable 12VDC 1A adapter instead me thinks. Thanks wingnut

                      Hi Bill

I reckon you are right there, I work on ATMs that have a separate power good cable external to the PC (dont ask me why) that has a stereo jack style connector in a spot where it is easy to accidentally pull partly out. The number of "No power, ATM down" jobs I have had......

Back to it, I googled "ATX power good" and got the following which are worth a look.

                      http://freespace.virgin.net/matt.waite/resource/psu/atxpsu.htm

                      http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-a-Computer-ATX-Power-Supply-to-a-Lab-Power-Supply

                      http://www.duxcw.com/faq/ps/ps4.htm

The first seems enough for your requirements Remy.

                      Have fun, Jeff

Hi Remy, If you are using a wiper motor, maybe a 1 amp power supply is not enough?

Actually, just had a brainwave (ooh the pain, the pain) a car battery charger will be more than adequate to drive the motor, maybe you have one hanging around in the shed??

                        Dont give up yet!

Here are the wiper motor innards.  Hmmm...   :-/ :-?

EDITED TO ADD: Pic of the top to show how the shafts go thru.

                            Remy,

you will need to extend the shaft on the large white wheel to outside the case some how....

The rod and the output shaft will be useless as they are designed for the reciprocating motion...... So is there a shaft on the other side of the white gear wheel...... or any way to connect something?

Doesnt look too easy to me......

Here is the underside of that power supply
AC adaptor converts to DC up to 12V
                              1 Amp

You can always try to take the entire silver bit off completely. The motor should be able to be separated from the reciprocating gearbox. Then you just need to stand the thing up to use it.
