I keep track of starting and finishing weights, ambient temperature, the times of FC start and finish, SC start, SC rolling (if I go that far), time roast stoped and time cooling fan starts.
Theres room for notes which can cover everything from explanations on heatgun settings through to cupping notes.
If I find a particularly tasty brew I can go back and see if might have been something I did differently to usual (on purpose or otherwise).
The 14% weight loss is fine though might have expected it to be a tad more given the overall roast time - weight loss is generally about 15% with most beans.
I havent roasted any MTC from the most recent crop, but have to say that all of the MTC I have roasted actually produces a far more even roast colour than what you have there, and seemed to be occuring from the early stages of the roast eg. at 5 min there are green beans mixed in with yellow. In the last pic, even individual beans seem to be roasted to various colour.
Always break a few open (you can spare them) and examine the inside to see if the colour is identical to the outside.
Ive not used a corretto - maybe its due to the angle and height of the HG, the rectangular body of the BM, speed of the paddle, quantity of beans...who knows! What I would suggest though is to track your beans. Try and get a feel for if theyre moving about uniformly throughout the BM and not being pinned up against a corner somewhere.
MTC dont seem to have as distinctive a FC as other varieties, though its definitely there. Start with the status quo and aim for FC at the 11 or 12min mark ramp up 3* thereafter, and stop at the very first signs of 2C. Should all be over in about 16min. From that point, you can begin to tweak it to your own liking.
Youre lucky -- round our area we only see interesting "stuff" at hard-rubbish time, but if you try to claim some, you run an even chance of someone rushing out to tell you to p*%%s off (this has actually happened to me!) Nasty mean-minded expletive-deleted ... >
So very glad to hear there are still places in Oz where its not like that 8-)
Havent attempted either of the 2 beans you mention as yet; reading up on the Yemen, it seems to want a very long slow roast -- FC 12 mins, SC 20 mins, sort of thing -- much as you achieved with your MTE here in fact
But so far I havent achieved anything nearly this stretchy, so Ive been practicing on less valuable beans while I get my HG under control (its a 2000W Ryobi capable of a popper-speed roast if Im not careful!) Do you happen to know what the power of your Ozito is?
Theres lots of good info on roasting in the "cupping" section btw, checkout this thread on the Yemen (the earlier chat is about the 2007 batch; gets onto the 2008 towards the end). There are similar threads for the various MTEs; not so much detailed roast info tho.
Tehehehehe.
They seem to know when i need bits and bobs, thats for sure. I live in newtown so there are lots of alleys and people sort of use them to pass on pre-loved items to new homes. A very good system. Whenever i need some random bits and bobs i just go for a ride around on my bike and usually find what i need before too long.
When im doing a roast in the garden, i dont know what the neighbours must think im doing. Hopefully the smell will tell them before they get any funny ideas.
Roast time. Just kind of happened that way. What do you think would be ideal times for the MTE 549 and Yemen Bani Ismail (those are the two beans i have at the mo).
Any feedback appreciated.
Gotta say, thats one very handy back alley youve got there! Do the neighbours think, hey, chuck it out in the alley, the guy with the weird coffee fixationll snaffle it up... ;D
Wondering tho, were you aiming for such a stretchy roast, or was that just the way it happened?
