I was in Jaycar today to get some AV cables for the new TV and happened to ask about thermocouples
The non DMM type is on special for $31.46

This model does not connect to the computer but one can manually add time and temp on an excel spread sheet (just record it on a piece of paper and transfer it to excel)

I almost got one but I thought I would ask the CS forum first

As long as you dont mind keeping track of the time and plotting it then it will work fine KK.

The price is pretty good too.  What does the probe look like?  

In the last week we have been testing a replacement meter for CSrs.  It will cost something like $80-$90 (the US$ sux at the moment) but has USB output to the PC.

The programmer had got it to work with the CS monitoring software (woo hoo a win!) but the meter has some quirks that we are hoping to find solutions for.  The USB drive is "very rough" and it was a bugger to get working under Vista... the meter also powers-off after 35 or 40 minutes which is annoying.  Anyway, we are talking with the manufacturer to see if we can lessen the gotchas.  

So... that was just an FYI.  I would guess it might be closer to Christmas before we have a replacement meter so if you are happy with a manual one then go for it.

It comes in its own case
the probe is flexible wire with heat proof sheath cover
can also buy a solid 100mm probe if required

If I only need to wait a cupla months it may pay to wait

I really dont know as its too early to tell if we can make this new meter do what we want it to. I wouldnt have posted any early info except you asked the question ;-)

Get the solid probe if you buy a meter, those little beads are pretty fragile. The stainless stick has done 1000s of roasts at the Snobbery with out failure... Im happy with that.

looking forward to getting a MM with USB/serial output so I dont have to spend all my time writing temps down and can watch the roast more...

I was just emailed a new beta of the software from the factory that should work with Vista better.... Ill do some testing over the next couple of days and report back.

KK, I picked up one of these from Jaycar the other day - it will do the trick whilst i wait for a the new CS USB DMM to hit the streets!

I had to go to Jaycar to exchange a set of cables

I could not resist I got the Model QM-1323
Same as the one in post #1
But an updated model for $31.46

I will upgrade to the new one when it becomes available

Now I need a printable manual graph to record the results
Anyone have one on hand

It was made for the CS software output but you could fudge it to graph using manual time and temp data pretty easily.

These have been around for a while KK but I dont know if the data stream is compatible with the CS Roasting Software. Id wait to see what Andy works out with the one hes experimenting with,
