Re: Starting up Business with a 2kg Roaster?

My pick would be COPE sensitive freight
However I did send a window cleaning invention of mine from Brisbane to Perth with WA freighters and was delivered in one piece.

Steve, if you havent already done so, I suggest you contact the importer of the Toper and ask them to arrange packing and moving it. They will be experienced in doing this and already have a freight company familiar with managing transportation.

Even if it costs a little more it would be well worthwhile.

Yes, I agree...I have shipped and have received a couple of roasters, and professional packing is essential. You need to crate it up and have a professional handle it, as the roaster is easily damaged.

It wont be cheap but it will be worth it...

          Cheers,

          Chris

Re: Starting up Business with a 2kg Roaster?

Dont skimp on the packaging! Especially considering the distance its travelling and the hurdles it will no doubt face going across the middle of Australia (jumping crocodiles, illegal boats, falling containers). No idea how much it will cost.. best bet is to ring a freight company for a quote, for reference however a pallet from metro to metro on the eastern seaboard costs me $250.

One thing that is concerning me to no end is are you sure the roaster is in 100% working order? Purchasing anything online is risky.. let alone a significant investment like that... perhaps a flight over to check it out is warranted even if the deposit is already payed. Also do you know its servicing and fault history? Its a beautiful machine no doubt but would be nice if you could see a roast done on it and get a visual on it functioning.

Hate to be the gloomy and doomy one the but last thing is you want is a roaster delivered into your rented space with all your items ready e.g greens, etc to find out it is faulty in some way. Also suggest organising gas fitters for the gas and flu before its arrival to avoid any downtime. Also dont forget to talk to the council about zoning and health regs, especially if you will be renting space now with the 5 kilo upgrade. Would strongly recommend finding someone locally who is experienced in working with roasters...Im sure your local roasters will be happy to help out.

Heres to hoping everything turns out 105% for you (although not putting our heads into the sand) and the roaster produces many a beautiful roast and the love affair continues unhampered.

The deposit is down, just waiting on the funds to come through and still investigating transport companies. Dont you worry, once things are rolling I will be posting every minute until it arrives. Well maybe once a day maybe. ;D

Unfortunately it is unable to do a roast in its current location. It was meant to be setup in a cafe in Brisbane CBD but council is playing hardball and thus the reasoning for selling it. It has been describe to me as great working condition and I suppose I am happy with this. The guys sounds pretty genuine over the phone and emails and would hate to think if it is not up to scratch without advising me. I feel pretty confident its working in good condition being that it is still a relatively newish machine.

The Goodies, what is the progress? Do you have the roaster yet?

As for sample roasters, Sweet Marias have some good (cheapish) sample roasters at a better price and performance than anything locally available.

Had some delays but now back on track. Payment in next couple of days transport the following week should be in Perth in a couple of weeks. Not long now.

Re: Starting up Business with a 2kg Roaster?

Great read, and great advice guys.

Goodies, Im glad you went for the 5kg. I roasted at home (block of 12 townhouses) for 18 months on a 5kg has garanti machine. My neighbour finally complained, but not why you would think.
My wife pruned her tree that was overhanging on our side of the fence, so she complained to the strata about the roaster to pay us back for the tree. It took a while for it to all play out, and no one else really cared, ultimately it was the Flue running through the garage roof (common property in a strata complex) that sealed the deal for us.
There is a lesson in this for you, roast at home as long as you can, until some one finally complains, it may never even get to that.
I was considerate to my neighbours, and roasted late at night, made sure they didnt have clothes on the line, etc. This will give you some time to learn your craft, with out the pressure of rent, etc, its also a great opportunity to get your family involved.

Keep us posted on the progress.

                          Wayne.

I will be looking at a place this week to see if its suitable for Roaster/Coffee Shop. Not sure that it is but worth a look. (Cant see in the windows due to frosted glass. I have to make sure its got sink and washing facilities.
