    Gday Oz,

It depends on the burner and nozzle combination mate. Basically, when you come to selecting these, you need to look at the thermal output range of each of them, usually stated as a gas consumption rate which you can then work back to a specific heat output. For example, most gas cylinders in Australia are filled with LPG constituted mainly of Propane which has a Heating Value of roughly 48MegaJoules/Kg of gas burned. Once you know the burner/nozzle rate, you can then relate this back to the Heating Value of the gas. One of the smaller Paint-stripping burner/nozzles would be plenty I would think; you just want to avoid burners that concentrate the flame, hence the preference for flame diffusing nozzles.

Propane gas burning in air can reach temperatures of nearly 2,000C so the "point" temperature of the flame is quite substantial.... Naturally, you wouldnt want this to be in actual contact with the beans. Its a lot more efficient to heat in this way though, since there is only a single conversion of energy taking place with the direct combustion of the gas being used to heat the end product. Electric Heatguns would run to about half this efficiency and probably even less. Maybe you could locate a metal fabrication business somewhere close who use gas burners of a range of sizes that you could borrow for test purposes, with the promise of a bag of freshly roasted, high quality coffee

    Cheers mate,
    Mal.

Gottcha....thanks Mal and TG. I wonder how powerful these are compared to the electric HG. I would imagine that a venturi LPG heat gun is a lot more powerful than the electric, but has anyone used one that can tell me?

    Cheers

oz have a closer look at the next one:

    Hot-air Burners for paint stripping,
    heat-shrinking, heating of PVC, roofing,
etc. With powerful, windproof and hot air
    streams
. Ideal for field work as no
    electricity is required. Powerful roofing
burners with totally encased flames for
efficient bitumen laying when open flames
    are not permitted.

Good ideas fellas. What I like about the twin gun into one container ideas is that you can do 1.2kg say per 20 mins with a 10 min cooldown and back up for another for 2.5 kg per hour approx.

I like that LPG array Mal! Thanks mate. The long thicker flame tip for paint removal etc looks like the go for bean cooking. I wonder whether it would be a bit naked compared to a HG though and it might burn the beans?

What about the "KK" style roaster using the turbo oven rather than the BM?
Can this do the QTY you want more easily??
Yes my roaster can be used with a heat gun quite easily

On my current Turbo Oven configuration It has roasted batch sizes of 650gm green beans with good results

I believe that with a few tweaks by making the roast chamber smaller by using a smaller inner roast chamber pot and insulating the gap I could go close to 1KG

I am also toying with the idea of a Twin Turbo model

Had a play today and this is the result. Twin paddle I usually only do 750gms but it will do 1 kg plus nicely as has been said.
The breville on this end does a nice 600gms (just did one) but I dont plan on roasting together but rather one after the other.
Result at least 1.6kg of green beans per hour from start to finish

I reckon thats awesome for 2 second hand BMs off trade me, a $60 New Ryobi and a $18 predator HG ;D
But of course thats what this site is all about and ALL learned here of course, Cheers !

    LOL,

You dont need to spend that sort of money on an LPG setup Oz. Plenty to be found for between $100-150 plus the cost of a cylinder, regulator and hose...

This is the sort of thing I meant... http://www.globalweld.com.au/products/sievert.pdf

But maybe fish and coffee beans are different.
    Yes they are.
Wanna try roasting a fish in a coretto?

Maxi Corretto might just mean 2 Correttos side by side using same model BM, same model HG and same beans. You say, too fussy and not enough control?? Perhaps...   :-/

However cost wise pretty economical  , an extra hundred bucks??  Probably enough of a setup to provide a few friends with some home roasted beans. On a larger scale it might get quite labour intensive...

I was recently involved in an aquaculture project and they didnt put all the fish in the same tank. Many identical tanks next to each other. But maybe fish and coffee beans are different.  :-?

    http://mpaksys.homestead.com/Heat_Guns.html

125,000 BTU propane gun...has anyone use one to see what they are like. I think the trouble is that they wouldnt have a fan. We need big heat and a fan to project it to re-create that Corretto atmosphere. However given that this gun looks like $1k US a 2kg Has or similar professional roaster becomes a much more affordable proposition.

I order to keep a lid on price I am thinking 2 heat guns pointing at say 45 degree angles into a straight tube and the tube end pointing into the large stainless container. However TGs idea sounds sweet - 2 heat guns sitting on a rack say and just move the bean mass up and down closer and further away from both guns.

I cannot see why the twin gun idea wouldnt work provided the stainless bowl was say twice the size of the current corretto. Thermal efficiency might be down a bit so a half lid might be necessary but thats not hard. The motor could be a single direct drive motor or a geared up or down motor, whatever was available - 240v. The twin guns would be sucking some juice, but then again it would take a LONG time to be too worried about that compared to 15-20 grands worth of 2 kg roaster off the shelf that uses LPG.

    Cheers

Ha! Dont tease me Mal...I might just be thinking that! My wife keeps nagging me to get my act together and build a larger roaster and start selling to friends that keep pestering us...1KG in the Corretto is viable, but I like the idea of bigger batches. I will have to investigate gas blow torches

    Cheers
