Where can i get the transfomer? Jaycar?
I lived in China for a few years and have one that I happened to bring back with me.

It is a pretty heavy duty one but im not sure of its specs off hand.

These are the drawings I did last year for a similar project
I went the Turbo oven path instead
However you and others are welcome to my drawings of the drum/sample roaster

Using an off the shelf small BBQ
        Engineering work required

Sides of lid to be reinforced with plate incorporating a solid bearing guide for turning drum
Hinges to be re-positioned to the left side of the roaster
Drum & drive motor to be fixed to lid but removable for service - when one lifts or lowers the lid the drum goes up and down  as it is attached to it

Vanes need to be fitted inside the drum  to agitate the beans

BBQ galore have these portable units with 2 gas burners for $199

          Re: 1kg home roaster

          Hi CSrs,

I am interested in a gas fueled drum roaster.
The idea has been smouldering in the back of my thoughts for some time and after harvesting a small single burner BBQ from the roadside has started to take a more concrete form.
Q for KK I am interested in your thoughts and drawings.
The BBQ that came up in the link has 2 X 9500Mj burners. Im a bit vague on rated energy/power values but if Im not up the wrong tree, LPG BBQ burners probably go from about 9.5MJ or 9,000BTU up.
2+ burners should be enough grunt for commercial volumes of beans.
          Have I got this right?
          Q for Matt H,
          From your 750g brown experience.
What energy input and burner (or device) do you use for your heat source?
What heat time profile do you follow?
I have been a Corretto roaster most recently but Im a newbie all through.

          Kind Regards
          Lindsay

for 750g roasted I put in about 930g of green beans. lately I have been using PNG kimel Peaberry. I get to first crack at about 8mins and second around 12 mins.
I dont have bean temps for this because at the moment Im only reading the air temp which is a lot higher.
heres a pic of the results.

              Re: 1kg home roaster

here are a few photos of my current roaster.
Ive been very happy with it even though it was kind of thrown together.

It used to sit over the little butane burner, but I had to crank it to get decent roast times.

It now sits over the portable bbq in the last pic. this is much nicer, more heat, and Im not buying those little butane cans all the time

                  Thanks,

I have hooked up with a friend of a friend who works at a steel fabrication place and is also into coffee.

for this prototype he said he is willing to have us there on the weekend to have use of his equipment and skills.

well if you can, make a template, but as it might be a "one off" that can be harder to do.

might be a few around interested if the price is fair i reckon

Nice work, Matt. We have a similar setup but noise is an issue. How do you keep the noise down enough to hear 2nd crack?

                        That is my thought too.
It is very early days, but I do think there is a big hole in the market for a larger but cheaper roaster.

What is it on your set up that is making the noise?
My current setup has no bearings so the metal on metal rubbing makes a bit of noise, but I can still hear the second crack loud and clear.

here is the drum for the new roaster with its wiper motor attached

with the bearing on the front it glides around very smoothly and quietly

I saw this bbq at bbqs galore, I was very tempted to buy it for my project but have since decided to have the whole thing made instead of altering something else.

very nice bbq though, all stainless.
