    Re: 1kg home roaster

Hi Matt, I really like the look of your roaster. Ive been gathering bits & pieces to make a drum roaster that will fit on top of my bbq. I doubt anything I build will look as good as yours, if in fact I get around to it at all!

What size are the holes in your perforated sheet metal?
Does the chaf flow out freely or do you get some collecting inside the drum?

I think the holes are about 3mm. I will check.

some chaff comes out of these holes but a large amount of it actually gets blown out the front opening of the drum.

there will be a double wall between the heat and the bearing, I hope that that will suffice.

it should be ok anyway according to the bloke at the bearing shop, but it all remains to be seen.

I had it made at a metal fabrication place off my specks. not cheap, but I wanted to do it right this time.

                  oh ok,

the housing on the current one is made from stainless pedal bins, I have just riveted the lid inside the rim of the bin. thats what gives it that neat look.

                      thanks Luke

here is another pic with the gas element that I will be using. It is the element out of the portable bbq that you can see my current roaster sitting on in one of the photos above. I got the bbq at ALDI for $99.

I lived in China for a few years and have one that I happened to bring back with me.

It is a pretty heavy duty one but im not sure of its specs off hand
I have also just checked the transformer that I use for the wiper motor and it is 12V 12A output.
It handles a full roast no problems without even getting slightly warm.

BTW, I think I will be doing a roast today so I will take some pics of the action so that you can see how this type of roaster performs.

here are some roast pics from my current roaster. the new one will be the same idea, but bigger and much more refined.

not sure how to put text between the pics so Ill label them up here

loading the beans ( about 650g, new PNG sample from a friend)

                          beans after 4 mins

Beans after 8mins (first crack at about 9mins)

Beans after 12 mins (just before second crack)

smoke coming out the front into second crack (started about 12 and a half mins)

tried to get a shot emptying beans into cooling set up

my cooling set up in action (the box has the innards of an old twin motor kitchen exhaust fan, sucks hard)

beans in the cooling set up

the finished result (they smell awesome)
