Ok........now up to 2 broken TOs 4 or 5 day old solid element Cookwell Turbo Oven.........buggared >

Got to 165C on a roast of Ugandan, and just stopped working, element and fan, im guessing fuse again, even if its a thermal fuse 165C cutout is no good for a roaster, unless your making a very very very light cup roast ;D

Will return with innocent look on face.....and attempt to find a glass element model....more control, and worked >

Shezzzzz, and bugger!!  I know you are in Brissy but we were in Melbourne last Saturday [took Mrs Mono and my boys shopping] after picking up my new Macap M4D from Talk Coffee and we wandered into the Homeart store at Northland and they literally had stacks of both types there, heaps in  fact. Have been toying with tryng a glass element one myself.

Also picked one up today, will do a dry/empty run tonight and see how much different it is to the steel element [which will become my spare TO].

Ok, got home from Homeart......pffffew! that was lucky, took the old one in, which looked like brand spanking new as it was only 4 days old, the young girl (and AM is gunna love this one!) said she needed to test it prior to making the exchange or refund she proceeded to head over to the nearest power point i said....are you sure you wanna test a broken piece of electrical equipment on a normal outlet? she said, yes its store policy , now this young girl was all of 17ish years of age, obviously didnt hold a degree in electrical engineering testing a suspect piece of equipment because its"store policy"! WOW imagine the law suit!

Anywho.....turned it on and it fired up , guessing it was a thermal cutout of sorts, i said that it definately has a intermittent problem and that i wanted a refund as i bought it for my mother who had replaced it already with another.....they reluctantly accepted.....phew!!!

Headed to the next suburb to the next homeart and picked up a halogen model that is slightly different to the original i had in the beginning, for starters its guard has a "wall" around it, designed to direct the heat down, and the light/halogen bulb/element isnt as bright, im guessing this is the one AM was on about, it looks the goods, and AM, on a side note, the second entry hole we were looking at in my original one seems to be the power to the element going back into the top section, so there are a total of 4 wires connected to the element.....

Decided to make the beans that were still in the roaster from when the last one broke down into some CP so turned it all on from a dead cold start (24C), within 30 seconds the bean mass was on its way to fc at 20C/min and held that till about 7 mins when it decreased to around 15 average for the rest of the roast(till fc), ran it into Rolling fc and stopped at 210C.......perfect for my next batch of CP

                So my observations thus far,

The element in the halogen models (cookwell) are far far far more responsive and hotter than the solid element

I could not do without the light from the halogen element

The slightly (20%) softer light in mine is heaps better to view the true color of the beans

This model operates slightly hotter than my original halogen model....

Will post profile to fc soon

I can understand store policy... But if it had a short and then tripped the Store / facility ELCB that would be interesting...

If they did not have an elcb etc then even more of an issue for the store staff member and the company...

Yep... Sounds like either an OT cut-out or some other problem. The OT fuse in the coil is just that and would not have reset. Further more I do not recall a resettable OT cut-out when I was looking at you... But then we knew it was the motor coil, thus did not go having a close look at other bits.

Further more... The new / old one you took back sounds like a different design and have not seen inside that one.

PS. Do not dump the other one... I still want a chance to review and maybe even fix ;D

All good AM, will do, its got a usable element anyway....

Ill take some pics of the new one tonight and post em up......very happy with it especially the fact that with this one, no mods are required on the guard at all to achieve fc in 11 mins from cold start

Here they are, note the guard wall and the two pairs of elec cables going to the element.....

Looks good...  That guard will assist with directing air straight down and in a nice vortex. Tis what the extra mod I was talking about...

                          Care to swap  ;D

i know its near impossible to guess AM, but what are your initial thoughts on the 2 pair of wires for the element?

My first guess is the element has two connectors and we have the two wires going to those. The separate holes is just ease of access and not having to squeeze two wires in one insulator and through one hole with sharp edges.

Take the shield off and all will be reviled.

                              Send a pic.

hmmm... Ive got a solid element model (the one you picked up WSully) and it seems happy enough so far, but Ive found that 500gm seems to be the right green weight to get to CS9-10 in about 18-19 minutes. I run a halogen lamp next to it so I can see what Im up to when roasting at night.
Ill know which TO to look for once I kill this one though.
Have you been doing back-to-back roasts when youve killed off the previous ones, or just first roast of the day?

Ive been wondering if running a fan across the TO during the roast would help it & prevent these burnouts. It would certainly help clear the smoke during the final stages of the roast so I could see better what was going on.
