Hey Dsgfh, (that name just rolls off the tongue) ;D

I think the big difference between the solid element and the Halogen element is mainly just response time, as you can see in one of the graphs above the "tightness" of the simmerstat/tstat is also affected by this lag.

As to the burnouts.....the first one was simply lack of maintenance on my part, blew a thermal fuse which was designed to die at 150C within the top part of the TO (plastic bit) and the second........who knows :

A fan wouldnt do any harm i wouldnt imagine, especially in my arrangement where the whole pot is mounted in an insulated wooden box of sorts, with the KKTO beta kit though i know some people where commenting on the effects of wind on the system, so in this case i would make sure the breeze is only going across the TO itself.

Today i went and cleaned up the whole system, mounted the old ex govt P3 PC up under the main bench, mounted the 17in LCD screen on the top shelf of the system and hitemp siliconed in a prefilter for the cooling system, all the wires ziptied up and out of the way, looking very sexy now!!

Ill post some pics tomorrow morn of the complete setup

Mounting the PC has just given me an idea for a table-top hinged off the side of my roaster for the laptop to sit on, but folding away for more compact storage. I can just see the IT guys at the office wondering what all the chaff is between the keys when I eventually hand it back ;D

Well our electrician finished the wiring to the "workshop"last night. Did a short dry run with the halogen TO fitted with the modified guard from the solid element model. 200c in under 2 minutes ;D. Looks as if it may now be coming together, still playing with drive shafts, bearings/bushes and paddles.........but thats another story :

Just an update on the roaster, two problems have surfaced, minor and fixable, but little problems none the less,

                  - Temp probe for the data logger goes nuts above the 160C mark, jumping anywhere from 0C to 300C erratically, so bad that its turn the DMM and software off material and the rest of the roast is done by sight, smell and sound, I have a new probe which should fix the problem, I’m almost sure its the probe, but i suppose it could be the DMM? better not be >

                  - The little tea leaf strainer/pre-filter isn’t optimal, fills with chaff and blocks the vacuum, i gunna trial another idea I’ve got with a bigger filter, im guessing that the problem is arising from an ineffective chaff removal within the roaster itself, but thats my pots fault, not KKs original design as he uses a different pot/insert.

I very happy with how the roaster is performing now, so its almost time to move on to a home gas roaster!......it never ends!!! ;D

Im looking forward to seeing the K&N high-flow filter installed in the system :-p

                      Yes mate...

Pretty well any filter fitted across the air-stream will block up sooner or later. Its better to try and devise something that takes the chaff out of the air stream rather than filtering it. Doesnt have to be anything fancy you know, even though I suggested a simple cyclone separator before, you could just use a tortuous path separator which catches the chaff as the air flow is forced around one or more sharp bends in the pipe/tube....

This would require some positive air introduction though, as per the earlier idea you had re: supplementing the TO heat supply with a heatgun arrangement.....

                      Mal.

                        So make a dust separator

You can also buy them from vacuum shops
                        No filter required

                          Good find KK.... 8-)

Didnt know there was such a good how-to to be found. I guess youd just need to make sure that only low temperature air entered the unit or conversely, make it out of galv pipe fittings....

                          Mal.

                            They are called Cyclonic Separators

I sometimes use them in my line of work

This is a picture of one
                            It attaches to the pipe
