Re: My new KKTO - learning to use it!

Ok, picked up some insulation off KK today over a coffee at venezianos, got home, put 3 layers under the liner and a layer between the liner and the outer bowl, fits perfect now, no need to prop up the liner, one problem, the insulation didnt really do anything in my particular circumstance, dropped in 600 Gm of INDO at 150C and it followed the exact same profile curve as the roast without the insulation, outside of the pot got just as hot.......still took 15 mins to hit FC, flat out, then struggled to get to SC, i want to point out, KKs kit does this with ease, this is just my setup im talking about, KK has done tonnes of work to get his to work perfectly, mine doesnt......yet

Im thinking of cutting off the top of the basket so the heat source is closer to the bean mass, what do ya think?  it just seems to be pushing it a bit hard, im thinking the cookwell isnt quite as powerful as the tiffany that KK is selling in his kit,  see photo below

Re: My new KKTO - learning to use it!

If you dont mind how it looks you can also insulate the outside of the pot

You can also run a thin bead line of silicone at the touch point of the TO & the adaptor ring

      Before you start cutting
What is the distance from the TO element to the bottom of the perforated insert ?

      KK

Will be doing this tonight KK, see if it works, i would imagine it will make a difference, and ill wrap what insulation i have around the outer pot too, what can i use to cover the insulation? maybe i could get some sort of hard material, stick the insulation to that and wrap it around, i may be able to piece together enough to get it around the pot, patch work quilt style ;D

        cheers

Insul Brite - Spotlight is good and cheep...

My system is also 17.5 cm and prior to just recently... Never had any insulation... However I did mount my system a little differently and that may have helped. The outer shield and handles were pop riveted to the main pot and I had a small amount of Si tubing that went on the top lip... However it is not as heat proof as I had hoped and after a number of roasts it is all cracking up...

that insul bright stuff may only be good to 150 deg i think i remember reading ????

might be OK as an outer wrap but hitting 220deg might be an issue....

              Yep..

But it should only be the outside of the outer pan..

Thus it gets hot... But not sure how hot.. Easily checked though..

Encase it in commercial thickness aluminium foil and wrap it around

It could also be a matter of leaking heat
So a smear of silicone at the contact points may be all thats needed

Re: My new KKTO - learning to use it!

                            Hi Warren

I found that problem with my turbo in the beginning I first built one using a ss boiler and could not get it to go over 200*so I scraped that and built one with the pasta set.

I tried mine with out cutting the top off and found it was taken to long to get to first crack 14 16 minutes so thats when I decided to cut it down to get the element closer to the bean mass I now have more control over the temp and can run to first crack with in 10 mins.

I also have used a fire blanket folded and raped around for my insulation with a freezer bag to hold it in place the one with silver lining" foil". Fire blanket $9.95 Bunnings.

These mode have made a big difference and I now have no trouble getting to second crack temps..

                            Hope this helps ..

                            Cheers Gra.

cheers gra, my have to resort to that, but ill try the other stuff first, just one question on your probes, i can see your DMM probe there, but whats the other one?

One more, how do ya find ya paddle?

                              cheers mate

The second probe is a thermometer and count down timer with alarm I used in my corretto the dmm probe is deep in the beans and other is close to the top of the beans .

I have tried all different paddle types and the tube tends to do the best job for my set up I used the base of a bread maker as my drive system so  I get plenty of movement in the beans ;D ;D

                                Cheers Gra..
