      Righto, silicone = pain in the a**, suggest commercial grade silastic "MAY" do the job, however with the fumes.....maybe not, it melted to goo at around 120C, out came the turps, then the soapy water, so back to square......well 1.5, havent sewn up the insulation for the outer pot yet......will do that and report back with results......hopefully tonight

      cheers

        I use Permatex High-Temp RTV Silicone Gasket Maker - Red, 85G
        I also used it to stick the gas oven door glass back on when it broke

          Re: My new KKTO - learning to use it!

          Cool KK, thanks, ok i have applied the insul bright to the outer pot, 3 layers sewn up by my lovely mother in law wrapped around and held on temp with some stretchy cord, below are a couple of profiles,

          First is 600gm INDO i did the other night, inner insulation only from KK, 15 min to first crack, another 5 or so to SC, beans were dropped in at 150C.

          The second is tonight, 600gm INDO with inner and outer insulation, however, i tried a different approach, beans in, TO to thaw (50C) waited till bean mass hit 50C and hit full power to first crack at about 20mins, then backed off to 225C on the dial to SC @ 25.

          Now i think i have first crack to SC sorted, i can get 2-4C/min easy as to control, i really want a faster climb to first crack though, i will try dropping in at 150 tmrw night see how that goes, i think i will have to cut the inner basket down to get bigger batches though, i will however try the Permatex Silicone first though.

          Im having fun doing all this, i may sound annoyed but im really not, my coffee IS tasting better, great comments from friends and family, and they dont know ive changed roasting methods, so thumbs up to the KKTO, ill get there, tweaking and practice makes perfect!!

            Re: My new KKTO - learning to use it!

            Ok, grabbed the hi temp silicone from supercheap yesterday and applied it to the top and bottom of the KK adaptor ring and the inner ridge of the outer pot......it set dry overnight.

            Sister in-law rang pleading for some coffee, any excuse to roast I say!! So i preheated to 150C let the roaster really completely get up to temp, dropped in 600gm of Indo once again, had some initial problems with the temp probe, but it was heading to first crack as per normal at around 15C/min, now the problem I was experiencing was a drop of climb at around the 7-8min mark, down to about 6C/min mark......sorted! It got down to about 10C/min and held it due to a hotter thermal mass! Perfect!

            Hit first crack @ 197C @ 13:30 and SC @ 210C @ 19 mins, had to turn off the heat at 17 mins, thermal mass did the rest of the work for me!

            Ps there was no leakage of hot air at all with the silicone applied, it was all coming out of the TO vent.......is this ok KK ?

            Happy happy! Will post profile tmrw, cheers Warren

              I am interested in how teh Hi temp Si travels...

              I tend to run for about 5 min at thaw..Aprox 70C with my beans in...

              Then ramp to 250 .... But have not logged the rate... But it does taper off as I would expect...

              FC at about 12 to 14 min at about 190C + 5 (time starts after kicking in the heat...)

              Burp and knock teh heat back to 220 / 225

              SC about 5 to 8 min later.. Sometimes this is a little hit and miss as to when it really starts Vs rolling SC - Usually around 205 - 210..

              Fluster and forget to get teh temp probe out and then dump and cool - About 2 - 3 min..

              Will have to do a log and a profile one day... But for now it tastes great..

              Thus yours sounds OK.. Proof will be in teh cup :-)

                Yep thats OK

                When I started experimenting with my roaster I was hesitant to start with large batches
                From memory I think I started with 350gr and built up with small mods

                However even some of my longer roasts tasted fantastic

                Try the bean equalization technique like AM

                  Re: My new KKTO - learning to use it!

                  Perhaps the slightly longer thermal gradients are due to the limitations of your particular TO Warren... :-?

                  Since KK completed all of the development of the KKTO using a Tiffany TO, thats what Ive stuck with and they also seem to be pretty easy to get hold of. The proof of the pudding with my setup has yet to be christened, while waiting for the finishing touches to be applied to the KKTO Kit thats coming my way.... Starting to get a little excited I must say.... [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

                    I agree mal, as I said before, and if my cookwell breaks.......Ill grab a Tiffany, but till then Im happy with the profile Im getting now, 13 mins to FC is Ok by me, and the coffee is tasting amazing too!

                      Thats the main thing of course Warren.... 8-)

                      I must have missed where you mentioned the future acquisition of a Tiffany TO. All the best mate [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

                        I use a Cookwell and like the glass element as it generates a light and I can see instantly when heat / power is being applied..

                        In addition only $79 so I can have a spare if I want  ;D

                        I also enlarged a number of the holes in the heat shield to assist with air flow..

                        NOTE:  There are some different models out there with different ratings..

                        Tiffany = 1400
                        CookWell = 1300 and 1400 (Stated 1400... But element marked 1300)
                        Others = 1300 and 1400

                        Note there are now a sway of different ones on e- b a y  "TURBO  OVEN "  and most are 1300W to 1400W

                        There is also some "TURBO OVEN SHEILD CLEANER"  ???

                          Great to hear you are getting good results almost from the get go

                          Also note, the roaster will roast better once seasoned with coffee oils and that will take about 10 roasts

                          So hang in there and things will get better with time, and by then you will know its strengths and use them to your advantage

                            Im thinking of cutting off the top of the basket so the heat source is closer to the bean mass, what do ya think?it just seems to be pushing it a bit hard, im thinking the cookwell isnt quite as powerful as the tiffany that KK is selling in his kit,see photo below
                            I have also been thinking with my investors hat on

                            I just recalled a mod I had thought of early on, but was not called upon to use it

                            Its an easy and reversible mod
                            A cylinder tube same diameter as the grill of the TO
                            Make it the length you desire or double sliding tube for adjust-ability
                            This gives you a closer to the bean mass starting point for the fan forced heat

                            KK
