Re: Time to migrate to a BMHG Roaster - Corretto

I pulled out my BB200 Breville yesterday, to "evaluate it as an option for roasting coffee in the future" as my OH was informed. I tried the bread cycle, which failed the tests. After that I proceeded to pull it apart on the dining table (I SHOULD have sneaked it to the shed) to determine how much was involved in bypassing the circuit board, to have the motor running nonstop.

I wondered if any of the other cycles might be better, so I will have to try the dough cycle.

I ended up with 730g roasted coffee on the weekend, after 5 batches in the popcorn machine, including one monster 200g batch.

Ill come back tomorrow and let you all know how the dough cycle goes.

My breadmaker is a "Breville Bakers Oven" model# BB290. On dough cycle is pulses for 3 minutes than continually stirs for 27 minutes. I picked it up second hand. The bowl on it is a tall and narrow and havent had too much chance to play with yet as my heat gun is still in Newcastle. But I am getting it this week so will know more about roast size capabilities in the next week. Not that I think 1kg will be capable in it. Atleast it will be quicker in getting to 1 kg than the popper.

    Thanks Mal,

Anyone got any ideas on additions to the BM list posted above....

Anything they would like to know from we, the existing users?

Post your requests and Ill turn them into a template and we can start the database.....

And would the same thing for heatguns be useful?

    Something like

    Make/model
    Maximum heat output
    Number of settings
    Any issues with the HG
Tips on use of the HG

and anything else you would like to suggest.

I think a sticky (like in the brewing and grinding areas) where we post details of our bread machine...

    Make / model
    Size of bowl
    requires modding yes/no
    max run time without mod
comments re other mods required (shortened paddle etc)
location of temp probe and any issues re installing
any general comments re use (deep bowl - heats faster etc)

That way any new user could consult the resource - see if their model is listed and get an idea how good it would be.

The same could be done for heatguns....

    What do you think?
Great idea, would make it far easier to access than having to sift through all the threads to distil the required info.

Marc, you have chosen your path wisely and you will be rewarded

Slightly off track, but Marc raised a good point. We need a poll, a devious poll if you will, to list the BMs that do not require any modifiction and how long they run for on dough cycle etc. Kind of like the threads in the Brewing equipment section or whatever it is, to list the aforementioned info.

The only BM Im aware of is the Breville Country which doesnt require a mod - there are probably others - but as far as I can recall that is the only one where details have been posted here and a mod wasnt required.

The mod isnt hard to do - but does require electrical knowledge.

Once done - what a great way to roast! ;D ;D
Marc, I forgot!!! The other good thing is that mine didnt require any mod for the kneading cycle. I have never had a problem. In fact the other day without realising it I had my heat gun on half power and wondered why the temp was taking so long to increase and eventually woke up and upped the temp and went past 20 minutes without it stopping on me.

    Hi Marc,

I only do 300g batches in my Breville because that lasts about 5 days, so I cant comment on the 1kg.

Mine is a Breville BB250, old machine which served me well with breadmaking but is serving me better with coffee roasting. The advantage over others I have seen on various threads is the narrow, deeper bowl. This means the heat gun can concentrate heat more intensely so I can do a 5 minute roast if I want to. I have the gun set above the edge of the machine and can regulate to a 7-8 minute first crack and 11-12 second.

Based on other threads there are plenty of second hand bms around, just a matter of keeping your eyes open.

    Marc,

The model Mal has (Breville "Big Loaf") would have the potential for the greatest capacity.... but requires modding to run for the time required. (possibly also has a problem with very small quantity roasts)

Im very happy with the Sunbeam bakehouse (deep narrow square pan - seems to be easier to heat that some of the others) but also needs the mod and I reakon would do a kilo of beans....

OK, now that I have decided on the path of Corretto, I need all you BM gurus...

What Model is the most easiest to use without pulling a BM apart and moding it ??

So far, its the Breville Country... but they are hard to get...

    Has anything got any pointers??

I want to be able to roast 1kg at a time... a bit adventurous yes... but hey, thats half the fun...

    Perhaps Dual BMs ?? :-)

    Thanks..

    Marc
Working...
