  • Re: KKTO Beta Testers Feedback....

I think WSully uses a length of flexible vacuum hose to transport the beans in his KKTO rig.... Give him a yell or trawl through his posts from a month or two ago....

      Here ya go

I think its Heavy duty Pool hose of sorts, it takes the heat fine with no sign whatsoever of melting, does not even get warm when transfering the beans

I also fitted a tin tip from the plumbing section in bunnings so the hose does not contact any hot surfaces when sucking them out, PM me for details,

The above link has the following vid(a fair few mods since have occured to the roaster itself)

Thanks Sully. I found the pool tubing in Bunnings, $8 per 1mtr section, and they plug into each other to extend the length. I also cut a 6inch section off the end of an old steel vac pipe I had lying around at home, and used that for a nozzle. (which also slips nicely over the fitting at the end of the hose)

Just waiting for all the permatex to dry and Ill post up some pics. Almost time to roast again so will be good to see how well it sucks the hot beans out of the KKTO.

Thanks to others here for the design.   I forget who it was who posted the hand drawings for a cooler with a bucket and an old milo tin....

Anyway, heres the pics....   I originally permatexd all the sealing joints but had to tape them up too due to the silicone not sticking real well when flexed.

Top view of the collander sitting on top of a 9ltr bucket, inside the 20ltr bucket.

The pipe at the bottom of the bucket is 40mm PVC from bunnings, with a 3mm rubber insert to match the smaller size of the vac handle.

I cut a six inch length off the end of an old steel vac head / tube.

It made a great heat proof nozzle, and it was a nice fit into the fitting on the end of the pool pipe.

So how well does it work?
              What watt is the vac??
I am looking to do something similar but not sure if the vac i have will have enough suction

                Hi Mal,

The vac is 1800W and suction through the cooler & even at the end of three metres of hose is great.   It cools 500gm in the collander in about 30secs.    Im pretty happy so far.

Sully was right re the pool hose, it really is quite heavy duty and I cant see it collapsing or melting anytime soon.

                cheers.

basically mal, if your vac is strong enough to suck roasted beans into it by itself, it will be powerful enough to work in this design, with the bucked sealed correctly, it is the same suction power as the vacuum itself, no suction is lost because the inlet hose is the same diameter as the origninal one.......my vacuum is a cheap k-mart $79 jobby that is quite old, still sucks those beans into another dimension.......the cooling dimension ;D

The only down side is that back to back roasts will trigger the thermal cutout.

Actually one thing I didnt try was sucking ambient air through the vac to cool it prior to the next roast....

(having a full dust bag seems to heat it up too)

Will see how it goes doing this next time.

Make sure ya give the lid time to cool and if possible blow / suck and coffee fines out..... Many forget to clean and assume no chafe gets caught.. Wsully found out otherwise.

I can do back to back and not have issues..

1: When dumping.. I place the TO back on its glass bowl and turn the heat off and the timer on = Fan running

2: Dump clean the chaff from the cooking parts..

                        3: Beans being cooled

4: By the time I measure / reload the pots... The TO has been cooled by its own upper fan, so to speak.

5: Place back on pot and Thaw for 3 min, rather than 5 or more as previously done..

                        Up and running...

Actually I meant my crusty old vac will cutout on back to back, (not the KKTO).

Yeah I remember reading about Sullys problem with the chaff getting in. Ive since been vacing the TO after each roast now to keep it clean and free of chaff.

Yeah, same here borat, and the beauty of my system is that i can use my bean sucker to vacuum the TO 8-)

With the thermal cutout on the vac, ive never experienced it, i have a bagless vac though, and quite a long suction path too, which will allow the temp of the air to cool considerably before it hits the vac, the clear "cyclone" crap collector on the vac is handy to see the chaffe spinning around, so i can empty when it gets too full, i have roasted 5kg back to back in my KKTO setup as a whole, thats ~10 roasts which took around 2.5 hours , without a single drama (it was for a catering function)

I see I am not the only one pushing the boundaries of volume roasting although I havent got to 10 roasts in a row but rather 6. Great roasting unit.

Ive attached an image of my latest attempt to have a bearing race in the agitator assembly to take lateral load off the blade and drive system. Originally I had a bearing at the top as per the first image and even using no-melt grease it became a bush not a spinning bearing. As a bush it worked a treat. I have now removed the top bearing and placed it below the colander. An attempt to keep it away from the direct heat of the TO. My reasoning being that the distance from the TO and the beans and floor would act as a type of barrier to the heat. Before trying it I washed the factory grease out and replaced it with the no-melt stuff. I have done a couple of roasts and today I popped the dust seals out, they have not discoloured, the grease still looks good and the bearing is still relative smooth. Too soon to claim this as 100% successful but it is looking promising. Will post again after a few more roasts.

Just an update about the loctite gearbox repair and drive shaft/bearing mod. Gearbox has not experienced any slippage since applying the loctite and the bearing addition is as success ;D. The bearing is as free spinning today as when I fitted it[to the underside of the colander] there are no issues with beans jamming/getting stuck etc. Last roast was the Yirg which are not a large bean and agitation is good, roasts are even......am a happy camper 8-)
