Re: Why does my roast taste green???
Yes, your popper times are mad!... You have a winner with your popper... the fan must be a real ripper... or the heating element isnt as high as others...
Last night (12am I finished), in the cooler weather, I did a 150g roast in about 9:30mins... It was nice and cool I thought Id do a few extra batches before the weather goes up and destroys my roast time length.
Got any pics of your roast?

Re: Why does my roast taste green???
19mins in a popper... Insane!!!!
If youre doing 150g in a popper with out the chinmey, youd be losing HEAPS of beans... I lose the odd bean now with a chimney...(With the popper slightly tilted - this aids in a more even roast with enhanced agitation)... but the Corretto Roast for me is only days away...just awaiting my delivery of a Breville Big Loaf BM and off to Bunnings for a few (Need a back up) HGs... my popper days are almost over... although it maybe good for sampling, so it may pop back a few times :-)

Re: Why does my roast taste green???
Heinz very special soup tins work well in poppers too. You might even enjoy the soup, as opposed to soggy asparagus in brine. Make sure you create a popperdom while youre making your chimney, theyre an indispensable combination.

Re: Why does my roast taste green???
I can see it now.
Police issue Tin Can Terror Warning!
After multiple reports of sightings in virtually every major city of smokey smelling people seen wandering around grocery stores and local markets with a pair of calipers measuring tin cans police today issued a warning to be on the look-out for members of this so called Tin Can Gang. When questioned about the possible reasons behind this behaviour police would only say that it was undoubtably something diabolically sinister as even their best investigators could come up with no explanation.
Police warn that if the general public should spot one of these Tin Canners that they should not attempt to make any contact but should immediately leave the area and then inform their local law enforcement agency.
Police went on to say that in at least 2 of the reported instances the people involved appeared to be testing the cans on a hot air popcorn popper and worry that it may be part of some new homemade airbourne distribution system. As a result they have asked all retailers and service centers for such items to report any suspicious purchases or repairs. They are requested specifically to be on the look-out for multiple purchases or repairs by the same person or any sale or service to someone who smells of smoke.

Re: Why does my roast taste green???
Id steer clear of the charcoal-colour shiny bean outcome for roasts. If you have roasted to that point, trying to emulate so-called Italian espresso profiles, the beans will be overdone. And, with the oils on the surface (producing the shine) will also tend to have a short shelf life. Not to mention no depth of flavour.

Re: Why does my roast taste green???
thanks all - will let you know. I did some roasting a few months ago when the starter pack came and I did it by the book based on what I had read here and on the linked american site. When I did I got underroasted green tasting coffee - it also smelt green. I will report back once these have rested.
Cheers

They are the longest popper times that I have heard of. I could do four 150gram batches in that time
More like the times I have been getting with my newly acquired corretto. About to try my first proper Corretto batch. I have been happy with the taste of my popper roasts though even though they are too short.
Will be interested in how your roasts taste now they have rested Ozscott

Re: Why does my roast taste green???
My Crazy Popper and Coffeechasers do 5 min roasts.
6:30 if I pull out all my tricks.
150gms would also be the maximum in mine because that seems to be the fans limit with green beans and also because the biggerroasts are faster.
If you are getting 10 - 20 min roasts I envy you.
It should be easier for you speed things up a little than it is for me to stretch them out.
Definitely get a chimney; it will help keep the beans in for starters as they expand and let you keep to the bigger batch size.

Re: Why does my roast taste green???
An oily or shiny bean surface indicates a high level of roast, and/or old age, in bought beans.Originally posted by ozscott link=1164495503/0#7 date=1164504398mmm.there is no shiny surface like bought beans though???Perhaps I should invest in a heat gun.
A lot of places will sell espresso roast beans which are dark and oily in appearance, however not all beans are suited to dark roasts, and the taste may suffer as a result.
If youre worried about your beans being under-roasted, break one in half and check out the middle of it, it should be evenly coloured throughout, ie evenly cooked.
If the popper is producing good results and youre happy with the batch size, theres no real need to buy a heatgun.
Hope this helps.
