  • First Roast on the HG2

Here are some pics from my attempt earlier today.

I had to fly a little blind as I busted the DMM probe and was relying solely on the HG temp readout.

1.95 kg of PNG Wahgi AA
Loaded at 160deg HG temp which then dropped down to around 105 deg.
    first crack at 8 min
    second crack at 14 min

A bit quick but pretty happy with that for a first attempt.  Nice and even and smelling great.

Heading up to the Gold Coast on Saturday to receive some training with Mark at CRA.  Cant wait.

Looks good Kit. Nice colour and looks quite even, and that without any training.

Congratulations on the new arrival. Are you going to name him/her?

      Looking good,

Arent you getting smoked out in the room? I see no pipe from the outlet of the chaff collector to the outside.

Yep, I havent settled on name yet. Waiting for inspiration.

The "room" is getting filled with smoke, but since thats a covered deck, it dissipates pretty quick

The pipe is against the wall in the background. This is a temporary location until my my roasting room is finished.

If that no longer happened, you would need to change your CS username :-/

Maybe you can call the new roaster "Smokey" (a bit unoriginal), or Mercury which has the chemical symbol Hg (a bit lame) or "Nelson" after the well-known commentator that shares the same initials (if you like)

What a fantastic setup you have, if only i could stretch the budget to go that far.

Re: First Roast on the HG2

                  Hi smokey

Gees 2 kg of PNG Wahgi for a test ! Your very confidant :-)
I have settled on 1 kg for my 2 kg HG. Its sorta not too small that the roast runs away and not so much that so that I dont use up too much in one go. I can still buy a 2.5 bag and get two roasts in. The first one lets me know when to expect SC. The second roast is more fine tuned. Once a roast has been nailed one can buy 5 kg at a time. I find 2 kg of one bean from a roast hard to consume within a few weeks.

                  How did your course go?

                  Mike

                    Hey Mike,

Im heading up there on Saturday.  Will report back upon return.
Ill be running her at max capacity most of the time as I need several kilos per week so I thought Id jump straight in.   just glad I didnt hit CS 12.

Will post cupping results on the wahgi in a couple of days.

Re: First Roast on the HG2

Just cupped the "first roast" and the Wahgi was ok. A little bright and not as well developed as it could be. The profile would not have been very steady, and I did roast it a little darker than normal as I wanted to note when SC occurred. This probably diminished the usual fruitiness.

I returned from CRA last night and am armed with much more information now, so the next batches should be a lot better.

Let me say that any HG2 owners should really consider a trip up to see Mark. Totally worth it and challenged and changed some very key areas of my thinking.
