I shake every 1.30 minutes religiously
Up Down Left Right as in Catholic or Up Down Right Left as in Greek Orthodox?

I dont remember you doing it either way at the demo.
More of a Carmen Miranda technique from memory but without the fruit on your head.

I also found i could get repeatable roast times. I got very consistent results with all roasts having first crack and second pretty much at roughly the same time. Lets see if they cup similarly.
Just wanted to report back that these 3 roasts were mind blowingly good. Those agitators seem to work real well to give a nice even roast. But they only help with one part of roasting and dont do away with using your senses and making adjustments as need be. The roasts are all so sweet. I just seem to get a much sweeter roast with this roaster.

I did a roast the other day with a friend and he commented how moist the chaff and beans were to the touch when we dumped them. On the chew test, they were also chewier with less of a crunch.

      Javabeen.

Ha ha...didnt you see the behind the back and under the legs shake

I think I was a bit distracted at the demo answering questions on the first roast but I generally hold the two handles and give a quick shake in a circular motion....kind of like playing the maracas

I shake every 1.30 minutes religiously....but very quick then I drop it back down so as not to interupt the roast. This also gives me a quick chance to have a smell whats coming out of the drum.
This thing certainly looks like it belongs at the church LOL.
I do the shake every minute too but not too close to my ear for fear of burning as i normally do with the cocktail shaker filled with japanese slippers, martinis or long island iced tea...gyrating my hips. With the roaster, no hip gyrating, and only kitted with T shirt, shorts n sandshoes, and shake the thing at arms length. ;D

3rd roast in the baby was 200g of decaf and it was a disaster. Cant say it was the beans though. I think I had the flame too high and I didnt agitate it enough and just let it slowly roll. By 5 mins when I looked into it, some beans had burnt spots and the other parts of them were still yellow. Like tipping but way more extreme.

So, for the 4th roast, I went back to "normal" beans and agitated it very regularly. Also backed the flame off a little and FC came quite late (about 12-13 mins) but SC came shortly after and it looked good!

Another question which I think hasnt been asked. How do you clean the inside of the drum?

I think I might do an instructional video with commentary on the Babyroaster if people think that would be helpful.

Just let me know if you all would be interested as Ill have to put aside some time to do. I know some people are regional and have trouble getting in for training when purchasing so this may be helpful.

              Cheers

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do the instructional video. I imagine its time consuming but I, for one, would be very grateful.

I took the roaster to the coffeesnobs meet in Melbourne and was told by a few there that oils would build up inside the drum and help with an even roast.

Yes please consider a training video and possibly a live demonstration / training session in Melbourne.

I would be interested even though I was given a demo at the time of purchase (on the motorised version) . It would be useful to help identify key stage points in the roast. The info you gave above about checking for smoke was helpful.

Could you do one for the manual and automatic?

Just a thought...but you might get a few takers now with all this interest and a few baby roasters out there amongst the CS community. In fact owners of the baby would get more out of it now that they have had them for a while and had time to play.

Thats the main point of concern. Oils building up will definitely go stale sometime and I would imagine it would only pass on those nasty smells onto the new roasts. A bit like why we regularly clean our grinders and machines. So, what is the recommended way of cleaning the inside of the drum? Im not after a thorough clean that gets rid of all oils as I know they help with seasoning just like lard being used to season woks. Just the excess nasty stuff.

I dont believe that this scenario is likely since the surface temperature of the Drum during subsequent roasts would be high enough to carbonise any remaining oils or solid particles and therefore wouldnt further degrade with time.

No doubt Mark could shed further light on the reactions going on here....

Like Mal said, i didn,t find a build up of oils inside of the drum.
I didnt do any roasting for a week, and i couldnt find any oils that was rancid.
A few coffeesnobbers here would definitely appreciate a video or two. Perhaps post them on Youtube too for those who arent with Coffeesnobs.
Did a great roast of Peru yesterday. Getting better with every use of this roaster.
