Just made a flat white with it and wow that has a very good taste.

It has lots of body and there were no bubbles in the crema very happy with it.

Also when I was grinding it the smell was so full and strong.

I think I like roasting with the Baby Roaster more than the Behmor.

The Behmor is cool but its more set and keep and eye on it, once you get the settings correct.
    Glad all arrived safely mtarros,

Now all thats left is for you to fly to Gary and provide him with some training and the loop will be closed! ;D

Hi , Thinking of getting one of these ( the motorised version ) . Does anyone in the Gosford / Woy Woy area have one ( to maybe demo it as we have never roasted ) ? Who has stock ? Where ? How much ? Thanks Rick

Who says i need training?   ;D

I challenge you and mtarros to a baby roast off. Mwuahaha...  8-)  Simply forward enough funds for a business class ticket plus all expenses paid top class accomodation with transport supplied and i will be there

As Achmed once said with Jeff Dunham..."I kill you".

On topic, good to know youre doing well with the baby mtarros.

        Hi Rick.
In regards to your location, you could try to PM flynn aus or cksyd, they are in Sydney.
I do believe a physical demo helps in the decision making, in helping you decide whether it suits you or not.
Chris (Talk Coffee) or Mark (Coffee Roasters Australia) can help steer you in the right direction if you contact them.

Im in Sydney and have the manual model. To obtain one now, I think you would need to contact Coffee Roasters Australia (from the list of sponsors at left).

I would not recommend one of these for first-time roasters as you are unable to easily observe the various stages of the roast.

I do recommend trying the popcorn popper as a cheap and instructive entry into coffee roasting and then progress from there.

Got mine home yesterday. Thanks Chris for speedy delivery! Had few issues with getting the lid off. Tried almost everything before I stuck 2 metal rods into the hole to twist the thing open. Nothing like brute force

Anyhow, I have been roasting for about 5 years now using various techniques, latest being the HG with breadmaker. My first roast, I got to 1st crack in 6 minutes using butane burner at full heat, 2nd crack at 9minutes. For my 2nd roast, I turned it down and easily achieved the 10minute 1st crack and 15minute 2nd crack. I was surprised at how easy it was to control the duration (Maybe it was fluke).

The coffee used was one I usually avoid (Indian Monsoon I think). I find it too bitter with not too much character so it has been sitting in the back of my cupboard. But tasting it this morning, I must say, I was blown away. Which makes me wonder how many beans I have dismissed in the past because of my roasting short comings.

            Few things I have noticed:

            - Lid is hard to get off when it is new. Heating it helps. Brute force helps more. (Dont burn yourself trying to get the thing off while hot like me)
            - Giving it a manual shake every couple of minutes is no hassel at all
            - Beans come out even enough. I actually like the slight difference in beans roasts.
            - The crack sounds are more pronounced and I found it easy to tell the difference between 1st and 2nd crack
            - Hard to explain, but you can almost tell when the beans are done by the smoke that is coming out of the thing.
            - Having a peak during roast is easy, but hard to see in pot. I found it easy to just dump 1 sacrificial bean out and have a look.
            - I am going to have lots of fun with this thing!

Not a good idea. If you apply a little heat the expansion will allow you to take it apart.

As Dennis says, warm it first.
I always leave the lid off after roasting and only fit it once the roaster has been heated for a few seconds into a new roast.

                  I second that.
You only need to learn to distinguish the sounds of first and second crack.

I second that too. I had difficulty prying the thing out when i left it in the roaster. So just had to apply a bit of heat and it easily comes out. Please refrain from prying using pliers and tools as they can only do damage.

I would recommend at least every minute to get a more even roast. I normally do it every 30 seconds on mine. Take off, quick shake, put back. Easy.

I must say this form of roasting is fun because of the active involvement.

Once you know how to distinguish sounds it makes, theres no need to even look inside. If i want a C9, i dump as soon as 15-20 seconds into second crack. If C10, a bit longer.
Eventually you get to the stage with some experience when you can also smell the level of roast its at.

                  Gary 8-)

You could always just get the starter pack from beanbay and try pan roasting some as this is a similar type of heat that the Baby roaster uses.

If you kill some beans you will learn all of the stages that the roast goes through, Just make sure you do it out side.

Ive only been roasting for a couple of months and I had no issues roasting with the Baby Roaster.

Im guessing using the Behmor helped alot in knowing the sound of 1st crack and 2nd crack.

I just made a cup blending some Ethiopia Ghimbi (rosted in the Behmor) and some Peru (rosted in the Baby Roster) and wow it was a very nice cup of coffee.

Had a play with the laptop, DMM logger and baby roaster combo and came up with a great roasting tool.

Roasted some Bolivian Green Mountain Estate and came up with the following result first time.

                      Any comments?

Spikes and dips  along the graph shows when i picked up n shake every minute or so.

Managed to keep temp rise per minute between 1st and 2nd crack to 3 deg per minute.

                        Gday Gary....

Just changed your chart image from a BMP file to JPG. The BMP file was very large considering how small the image was.

Looks like a nice profile though mate so the coffee in the cup should represent that... 8-)

                        Mal.

                          Happy New Year Mal.

Sent PM so i won;t be off topic. ;D

Typing this with that lingering flavour of that flat white i had half hour ago, and the beans was roasted yesterday! 8-)
Off topic, the Bolivians were prone to tipping and uneveness which i didnt get from the El Salvador or PNG Waghi.

My HG just died so I was considering going up a model or looking at this puppy but now Im a bit wary...

Not many people see copper in its unoxidised state

If its exposed to air it will oxidise... When Ive cut or scratched copper (and also all the sources I can find report) Ive seen a reddish/pinkish brown colour of unoxidised copper - if its an alloy with a large amount of another metal I can understand the colour difference...

If you have any other information that contradicts this Id really like to see it...
