Stephen, the drum wasn't cut, it can be pulled apart. The two halves are (I believe) spun copper with a bead or rib formed around the edge, and the bead of one fits over the bead of the other. Pulling apart, especially if repeated, runs the risk of loosening the join such that it could come apart at an inopportune time.
Different users' experience may vary, but there is a post fairly early in this thread that recommends to not leave the removable handle in the drum as it can stick when cold, and sponsor Coffee Roasters Australia told me that they heat theirs before they can remove the handle to fill it. Pulling too hard on a stuck handle can pull the drum apart. A build up of coffee oil and chaff particles around the edge of the lid would exacerbate the problem, so an occasional scrub with a wire brush or similar is in order.
