  • Popper Replacement Motor ?

I have just had a mishap with my roaster over the weekend.
While doing the cool down cycle the motor just stopped spinning at high speed and started making a bit of a squeaky bearing type noise, like it was suddenly unbalanced.
I took it apart and blew a small accumulation of chaff out of the popper but couldnt get the motor to spin at the same speed it used to.
I have read on this board that people have replaced their popcorn popper motors before and was just wondering if anyone had some specs that would help me locate the correct motor of the job.

I have a pretty standard modded Crazy Popper with a 30V DCmotor, with the input voltage running through a speed controller so I can adjust the speed of the fan towards the end of the roast when the beans are lighter.
I would be happy to replace the motor with an exact copy but was also wondering if it there are more robust motors available out there?
    any help would be great

I can do you a brushless model aircraft one and controller "for a price" (about the cost of 3 new poppers)

I have a controller all I really need is a replacement motor,
what are the specs of the aircraft motor?

Your controller wont work they are 3 phase so they need an inverter. I was kidding not practical for the job. I stock 50W motors to over 1kW

Most of the litle Mabuschi type brushed motors run plain bearings if any and at 30V the brush gear will have a short life. There are better quality motors that could be adapted to the job but you are throwing good money at a disposable appliance. Time for a cruise of your local Cash Converters or Ferralbay.

well my lunch time trip to Jcar yielded nothing but a blank look. A search of the shelves revealed a variety of DC motors from 3v to 12volt but certainly nothing in the 30V range.
It seems a shame to bin the whole roaster over one component, but at this point I cant see another solution.
I do recall reading a post on one of the many popper mod threads that someone had replaced their motor with a new one but I cant remember where. I guess I will just have to go back through all the old posts and hope I can find it.

Boy, VFDs for r/c aircraft - whod a thought....

Ive been out of it for a decade or more but never suspected it would progress to this stage. Very interesting business youve got there bean..... 8-)

                Clever stuff mate..... 8-)

My (lack of) digital dexterity prevents me from engaging in this sort of fun now-a-days unfortunately. Had a couple of 1/4 Scale and one 1/3 Scale aircraft plus a real menagerie of aircraft in between those down to a wingspan of about a metre - all R/C.... Broke the heart having to sell them all off as my sons werent/arent interested in miniature flying machines.

I took up coffee roasting not long after selling up so I havent really looked back...

                Mal.

So no insights into the specs for a Crazy Popper motor Mal?
I have seen a couple of 12V motors that spin at 18000 RPM but they are a bit bigger than the original motor and will require a fair bit of modification to the housing for them to fit. I am reluctant to go down this route as i run the risk of destroying the popper all together.

                    Re: Popper Replacement Motor ?

Providing you get the speed right for the fan and the motor will handle the power required then it shouldnt matter in your case as you have a variable speed drive on it. Simply chop the voltage harder.

The Problem is trying to figure out what speed the old popper motor was in speed and power. A guess on power can be made by the physical size of the motor and then look up here http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/en_US...ny/c_0100.html speed is a different thing so you are on your own unless you get lucky and find someone with a Tacho and the same popper or there is some data on the net.

                      Hi Aaron

is the time / $$$ / reward worth it?

you could get a new popper for about $20 ?

                        Re: Popper Replacement Motor ?

Where? I would pick one up today if I could find one for $20.
There are two on ebay both already up around the $35 -45 mark and they are still active auctions. Plus I would have to pay for shipping. If you can tell me where to pick up one in  Sydney for $20 I will be onto it straight away

As far as knowing the speed, I just figured I would go for the highest RPM I can get and maybe just have to turn it down more via the speed controller

                          Re: Popper Replacement Motor ?

Problem with doing that Aaron is that dc motors at say a nominal 18,000 RPM at 12 V will be doing 45,000 at 30V so it will self destruct or burn out. If anything you want a slow revving 12V motor so that the speed when at the higher voltage wont kill it and it may be a closer match to the fan requirements.

Unfortunately the speed is going to be a guess at best I suspect.

BTW My Evilbay Popper was $17 posted and came with a free bag of popcorn so they are out there Factory seconds outlets, Cash Converters St Vinnies etc are next to look at.

would you pay postage from bris for a free one?

either whole popper or maybe just the insides ?
not sure if i still have both

i have to dig through the removal boxes but......
                            then test then post......

let me know, before i start looking

YES! I would love your popper Maheel.

Beanflying, my plan was to replace the transformer along with the motor so the 12V motor would be getting 12V or less depending on speed controller setting.
