  • Modded KKTO build + first roast!!!

So I finally got around to building my version of the KKTO (not that it needed improving or anything, but everyone has their own ideas on things)

First off, massive thanks to KK for the design and all the hard work, your a leend! And to WSully for the set up inspiration, I watched your youtube clip over and over....and everyone else that contributes to all the threads.

So the things I wanted to change will be evident, but the main ones were pot size and agitator shaft set up.

I was intending to use the standard pasta set but wanted the widest diameter one I could find to fully fit the TO - all too expensive for me! I found an ss 30cm stock pot from GoLo with ss lit too boot, for $19. It was about 25cm deep so I butchered it down to get my 9L volume (its pretty thin, I cant Tig so settled for rivets, might still silver solder it though)

After reading and hearing of shaft issues and mods, I thought Id go for an independent shaft that was self supported to sit between the pots/agitator and the motor. I grabbed a bicycle wheel axle/bearings and retrod them into a wooden hub which is mounted to the main cabinet. pictures speak a thousand words...

The DMM and K-type are not yet installed, just need a bit more cash, so my first roast (ever, by the way) was a little blind so I just followed others advice to thaw for 3min, full heat till first crack, burp, reduce heat to second.
I didnt really hear first crack, as I didnt know what it sounded like anyway, so I burped at 15mins but in all my excitement after burping I left on full heat, then pulled it at 23mins. When I lifted the lid I could hear little pops of second crack so figured it couldnt be too bad, I basically went till the colour looked about right, those TOs sure throw off a lot of light so once It was cooled (under 1 min) it was a little darker than expected.

All in all, I was happy with how it turned out and just cannot wait do do my next roast! Im truly bitten buy the bug.
    All comments and feedback welcome.

    OK, so the pics are;

Internal drum with my simple agitator (yes those holes took a long time!)

Outside drum/chaff catcher (made from TO expander ring and pot lid)

Top of axle coming thru internal pot (notch cut out to receive agitator)

Agitator on shaft (round tube with hole cut thru, piece covering half the top hole to give half circle for the shaft, removable bent pin to secure)

Inside the cabinet (shaft bearings in wood, bottom of outside drum, extractor fan on the left)

    Again feel free to comment.

    Peter.

Great job Peter with impressive results. Good innovative thinking as well. I like the chaff removal slots. I dont see any chaff in the end-product

The roast looks good to me though some prefer darker - better than my first attempt.

Which TO are you using - the Tiffany?

Definitely get yourself a DMM and dont forget your CoffeeSnobs card if you havent already got one.

I thought you would have been able to obtain one at the same time as you ordered your starter pack - the first card is free.

You sound like youve been well and truly bitten and the next monthly BeanBay isnt far off if you can wait that long.

Hows your will power? "Green bean acquisition syndrome",is a common CS affliction - nearly as bad as upgraditis.

"Get your free membership freighted with any bean purchase (except Starter Packs*). "

I was thinking of adopting the "I used to spend $x on browns so now I will spend the same on greens" and build up a nice stock, but it sort of defeats (one of) the purpose.

This whole wait 3-4 days to de-gas business is hideous! I wanna drink them NOW.

                What maheel said.
You have to work out your own preference and, once found, schedule your roasts so that as one batch is finished, the next is good to go.

I dont like freshly roasted beans and to my tastes, very little of what I have roasted KKTO tastes good before 10 days with a peak at 14 days. It also depends somewhat on the bean and the roast depth.

I dont think theyll last 10 days! I tried some this morning and they werent too bad at all, pretty happy with that.

Its the Cookwell by the way - will post some more pics of the whole set up next roast.

Re: Modded KKTO build + first roast!!!

                    Sorry for not posting sooner
I have had some health issues and that has kept me from visiting CS for a few days

Yes its a great build Pete
And what great looking roasted beans

As a general rule of thumb
The lighter the roast the more time it needs to rest/degas

However I have found for my pallet and the roast depth I take the beans to
The beans are nice to start on from day 3 to day 5 and the flavour gets more stable every day after

I see good days ahead on the roasting front for you

Re: Modded KKTO build + first roast!!!

                      Thanks KK.

Ok, so an issue I had with the first roast was that I had to turn the agitator shaft with a spanner as my motor still hasnt arrived. This meant on 3-4 occasions the spanner slipped off and the beans sat idle for a few seconds, im assuming this was one of the contributors to the tipping and the little craters in the beans.

Second roast - gaffa taped the spanner to the shaft! I roasted 500g El Salvador Chaparr and the result was much more even, no tipping, no craters but i was too anxious of overdoing them and pulled them probably a minute too soon probably a CS7-8. they still taste good, and getting better.

As promised, more pics. Im just stoked that I found a pot that is the full diam of the TO, I reccon I could push 1kg - Thoughts???

Lookin good Peter............ a kilo :-/ I think AM roasted a kilo+ some time ago but the time taken was not ideal. Hopefully he will be able to expand on that. But why not try it with some of the cheaper Brazilian beans. Mine is very comfortable @ 500g green and that serves me for 6/7 days.

                        Steve.
