So I finally got around to building my version of the KKTO (not that it needed improving or anything, but everyone has their own ideas on things)
First off, massive thanks to KK for the design and all the hard work, your a leend! And to WSully for the set up inspiration, I watched your youtube clip over and over....and everyone else that contributes to all the threads.
So the things I wanted to change will be evident, but the main ones were pot size and agitator shaft set up.
I was intending to use the standard pasta set but wanted the widest diameter one I could find to fully fit the TO - all too expensive for me! I found an ss 30cm stock pot from GoLo with ss lit too boot, for $19. It was about 25cm deep so I butchered it down to get my 9L volume (its pretty thin, I cant Tig so settled for rivets, might still silver solder it though)
After reading and hearing of shaft issues and mods, I thought Id go for an independent shaft that was self supported to sit between the pots/agitator and the motor. I grabbed a bicycle wheel axle/bearings and retrod them into a wooden hub which is mounted to the main cabinet. pictures speak a thousand words...
The DMM and K-type are not yet installed, just need a bit more cash, so my first roast (ever, by the way) was a little blind so I just followed others advice to thaw for 3min, full heat till first crack, burp, reduce heat to second.
I didnt really hear first crack, as I didnt know what it sounded like anyway, so I burped at 15mins but in all my excitement after burping I left on full heat, then pulled it at 23mins. When I lifted the lid I could hear little pops of second crack so figured it couldnt be too bad, I basically went till the colour looked about right, those TOs sure throw off a lot of light so once It was cooled (under 1 min) it was a little darker than expected.
All in all, I was happy with how it turned out and just cannot wait do do my next roast! Im truly bitten buy the bug.
All comments and feedback welcome.
