You have outdone yourself Mr F. This is a winner mod and sure to sell, not at all whacky.

I can sense CSers wallets growing warmer by the minute and if you dont act quickly, there may be an increase in global warming   ;D

You might consider selling the idea to Joe Behm or negotiating otherwise. I know thats not how you work but if you dont, someone else might.

Well done Andy. Amazing work. Wonder why no one else have not thought of this before?
Now we just need a few CSers who can offer their expertise to help you refine the project.

Before you ask "where do I get one?", "how much does it cost?" or "when can I get it fitted to my roaster?" please understand this is just a prototype and a proof of concept.

Cmon Andy, you know they will be beating the door down with - "are we there yet, are we there yet?"... ;D

USB Behmor - driven by Roast Monitor / Roast Controller

What would make the Behmor roaster even better for a CoffeeSnob home roaster?

How funky would it be to plug a Behmor1600 into a USB port and have full control of the fans, heater, afterburner, light and choice of 2 drum speeds?

Today Dad and I had a play with our prototype USB driven Behmor and Im very happy to say it worked very well.

First roast we used manual controls to build a profile template.

Ramp up to first crack at 90% power with the roasting fan on,  hit first crack at 10 minutes and turn the afterburner on while taking some heat out of the element.  Coast to second crack at 60% power and at 14 minutes turn off the element, spin the drum faster and turn the exhaust fan on to cool the beans.  It was a great looking roast.

Next was to try the automated control.  Load the above template into the Roast Controller, set it to [Auto] and hit [GO].  The software then controlled the element to follow the loaded profile.  The result? Another great roast from the Behmor!

So all in all it was a very successful day of testing and very exciting to see a concept come together.

We have more testing to do and some refining of the features then it will be a matter of making it into a package that can be easily replicated and installed.

This is a good time to note that the owner of Behmor-Limited has nothing at all to do with this whacky project and doing anything like this will instantly void your warranty (not to mention the safety risk of tinkering with voltage and heat).

The great news is that this modificaion/upgrade/kit will work on all existing Behmor roasters.

Before you ask "where do I get one?", "how much does it cost?" or "when can I get it fitted to my roaster?" please understand this is just a prototype and a proof of concept.

Now we know it can be done we will continue to refine the idea and then determine if its possible to supply it as a DIY kit or similar upgrade.

Here is a teaser picture of the prototype testing tonight at the Snobbery Too.

Please dont try this at home (yet!)
