The WFO temps are totally different.  The last time I roasted when the wood has burned down red with a little flame.  Going to try a bit higher temp this time with the ball off the floor.

        Re: Woodfired Oven Roasting Ideas

Observations today.  Very hard to slow it down between 1st an 2nd crack.  Uneven.  Oven temp was a bit higher today I think.  Might try it lower next time.

Roasted 600gms Mexico Yeni Navan Typica beans and then followed by 300gm of Laos Dong Hua Sao which arrived on my door step this afternoon Thanks Andy.

Definately want to progress with a motor driven cage rather than by hand. This will also get the beans off the floor and the heat from the fire will be the source of roasting and therefore slow it down a tad I think.

The KKTO is safe. The roast off that was very nice, even and looks nice. Still the WFO is an interesting thing. It is very versatile, and pleasure to use and maintain.

The only advice I can give you at this early stage of the wood oven coffee roasting journey is get a few roasts under your belt, because with practice comes understanding
However this method will have its limitations and you have to work within them

I totally agree KK. My first roast was a fluke I think.
I actually had a look at the photo I took that day, and the fire is much cooler. I think this was my problem today, but its a lesson learnt isnt it.

Im actually enjoying the whole "roasting my own more", both on the WFO and the KKTO these days. I think my understanding of the roasting process is a lot better, both though trail and error, reading some great advice on CS, and talking to other CS roasters.

I got 5 x 250gm of coffee out of it all today (2 KKTO, 3 WFO), and Im sure even a not so perfect WFO roast will be interesting to taste.

Now I just need to find a suitable tumbler style roaster. I think it will give better heat distribution.

Try a steel -Y- yolk in the oven as a rest for turning
You will also need a round pipe on the handle for it to work

                    trentski,
thankyou, I had skimmed through Baby Roaster thread couple of weeks ago, it was what got me keen about baby roaster. Have just reread it whilst enjoying a coffee and soo excited  think I really like the sound of this type of roast.

                    Lacehim,
following your WFO with great interest as my sister has recently moved to a property with WFO. Mentioned to my OH that should pack up my green beans and swag (360 Km round trip) and try a roast in Adelaide Hills.

                    cheers lu

                        Hi Jlazz62,

It was me that asked ;D I would be interested in swapping notes with you to get an better idea about temps.

Do you have a temp gauge on your oven?

So far Ive learned that for my oven I need to let the oven burn down until the wood is just a mass of red embers or possibly lower temp. Anything hotter and it just goes too quick from 1st to 2nd crack.

When you reach 1st crack to extend it youll probably need to pull it out from the fire quite a bit. I was going pull it out near the door and slowly edge it back over a few minutes for my next roast.

The previous roast that I though was a bit of a disaster has turned out pretty good. Drinkable at least, so not a waste of beans

A piccy of your woodfired oven would be great too. I cant believe I didnt get one sooner. Its great.

                          Hey Lace,
Out of interest, what wood are you useing? is there a chance of more even temperature from hardwoods? Red Gum or something like it. i noticed Bunning’s sells those wood charcoal things i always wondered if they would make a good roasting fuel :.

Nothing special at the moment. Im trying to source a supply of hardwood that I dont have to buy tons of in one go. Its got enough heat for cooking, but I too wondered if some qualtiy wood would have a more sustained burn and possibly a more even temp.

I tried the Ecologs from bunnings. They burned way to quick, but good for kindling.

need to go hunting for a dead hardwood tree or branches in bushland lol, aslong as its eco-freindly harvesting .

Hi trentski sorry havent posted just got back from sunny Gold Coast! I havent tried to roast in my oven yet hopefully get a chance this weekend if the weather holds up in Melbourne! I do have a temp gauge on my oven. I also have a laser thermo that I use to get correct floor temp and wall temps which works great. I also managed to get a couple of stainless sieves from a $2 shop so I can make my little bean apparatus! I have attached a pic of my oven which I built 12 months ago now from scratch using clay, sand and cement. Believe it or not the base was the hardest part! Keep you posted on the roast once I get a chance.[img][/img]
