Now that I have approval to include pictures, here's my wood fired oven roaster.
Cast aluminium doors would close between the drum and motor/drive system, haven't used it and not likely to as it would be too hard to control the temperature and too long getting it right, especially for consistency.

    Cheers.

Just found the site, registered and my first posting.
Two years since the above post made, but hopefully Lacehim is still around.
I also have a wood fired oven and built a rotiserie for roasting beans but not sure of heat control and consistence. Especially now that I have built a lpg roaster from an old lpg cylinder, I find that roasting is really a very complicated science and especially if you have 'basic equipment', consistency will go out the door. Sorry, but I like my coffee too much to waste and have second grade results.
The rotiserie that I built for the wood fired oven has not been used and simply lying around going rusty, but who knows, one day I will adapt a stainless shaft and cook a side of pork or a whole lamb if I can find a small one to fit through the door.

Sorry, can't work out how to attach photos yet.

    Cheers.

    Re: Woodfired Oven Roasting Ideas

Roasted tonight following lovely pizzas. Mmmmm.

I roasted about 30cm from the heat source, which was red hot and no flames. It look a while, and I probably should have been closer. 1st crack at about 17mins, first snaps of 2nd about 25mins and pull, but to be honest the roast looked more like a roast to 1st crack with some tipping and over roasted beans in there.

So based on that Im not wasting any more beans for the moment until I redesign the roasting cage. I personally think the heat source is fine for roasting. The problem is my method, where the beans are in the cage on the floor and arent being adjitated enough.

I think Im going to have to visit harris scaffe in brisbane next visit for a look at the rotissarie cage Im sure I spotted there and see if I can adapt that. From memory it was 60-80 dollar though. At least that might enable it to be more even to the heat source and operated by a motor or a crank. Im not sure if the floor, which is also heated causes problems or not?

jlazz62, have a go if youve got some green to spare and let me know how you go. My first roast was great, but the latest havent been as good. Still its great fun doing something different.

Me. Lucky for me my WFO is fired and the pizza dough is ready!!!!

Nice oven. Kinda wish I had built my own but time ran out. Can you block off to chimney? You might have issues baking bread in it with a permanent flue.

A piccy of your woodfired oven would be great too.
Hi trentski sorry havent posted just got back from sunny Gold Coast! I havent tried to roast in my oven yet hopefully get a chance this weekend if the weather holds up in Melbourne! I do have a temp gauge on my oven. I also have a laser thermo that I use to get correct floor temp and wall temps which works great. I also managed to get a couple of stainless sieves from a $2 shop so I can make my little bean apparatus! I have attached a pic of my oven which I built 12 months ago now from scratch using clay, sand and cement. Believe it or not the base was the hardest part! Keep you posted on the roast once I get a chance.[img][/img]

Nothing special at the moment. Im trying to source a supply of hardwood that I dont have to buy tons of in one go. Its got enough heat for cooking, but I too wondered if some qualtiy wood would have a more sustained burn and possibly a more even temp.

I tried the Ecologs from bunnings. They burned way to quick, but good for kindling.

    Hey Lace,
Out of interest, what wood are you useing? is there a chance of more even temperature from hardwoods? Red Gum or something like it. i noticed Bunning’s sells those wood charcoal things i always wondered if they would make a good roasting fuel :.

    Hi Jlazz62,

It was me that asked ;D I would be interested in swapping notes with you to get an better idea about temps.

Do you have a temp gauge on your oven?

So far Ive learned that for my oven I need to let the oven burn down until the wood is just a mass of red embers or possibly lower temp. Anything hotter and it just goes too quick from 1st to 2nd crack.

When you reach 1st crack to extend it youll probably need to pull it out from the fire quite a bit. I was going pull it out near the door and slowly edge it back over a few minutes for my next roast.

The previous roast that I though was a bit of a disaster has turned out pretty good. Drinkable at least, so not a waste of beans

A piccy of your woodfired oven would be great too. I cant believe I didnt get one sooner. Its great.

jlazz62, are you roasting in a woodfired oven?
Yes Trentski I will be roasting in my woodfired oven hopefully in the next couple of weeks I have bought some PNG green beans to try so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I will post some pics for all to see.

    trentski,
thankyou, I had skimmed through Baby Roaster thread couple of weeks ago, it was what got me keen about baby roaster. Have just reread it whilst enjoying a coffee and soo excited  think I really like the sound of this type of roast.

    Lacehim,
following your WFO with great interest as my sister has recently moved to a property with WFO. Mentioned to my OH that should pack up my green beans and swag (360 Km round trip) and try a roast in Adelaide Hills.

    cheers lu

Now I just need to find a suitable tumbler style roaster. I think it will give better heat distribution. Smiley
Try a steel -Y- yolk in the oven as a rest for turning
You will also need a round pipe on the handle for it to work
