Hi SS,

To be honest, I think that any commercial roaster would be well in excess of your needs unless you need the capacity. Mark does have some 1kg bench top models landing soon, but if I was you, Id be speaking to Greg about a Hottop with CS multimeter, probe and software. This would more than meet your brief and produce a superior outcome to a modded popper. It will also leave a whole heap of folding in your pocket to put towards a a few years of greens at the rate you are using them

I think you might find that there are quite a few 1kg and 2kg machines out there other than the single option suggested above and more than a few of them could be landed, shipped direct to your door, installed and complianced for well under the $10k mark... think more around $5k-$7k

call me a snob if you must  ;D but given we are talking coffee I would tend to stay away from equipment from manufacturing countries that are not really into coffee, and stick with the ones that have been well and truly into coffee for a very very long time...but then my background is coffee in a commercial situation so it tends to give me a certain bias in that direction particularly if we are talking tiny commercial design roasters rather than the small domestic roasters people seem to get into here....and then again the original question was about small /tiny commercial roasters....

I think we can all agree with the fact that Turkey has been well and truly into coffee for a very, very long time... dating back to 1554 and even the Vietnamese have been at it since 1857 and if you dont think they take their coffee seriously then you may wish to visit Saigon.. errr... Hanoi some day.

All of the roasters I listed do match the criteria of the OP in that they are all commercial batch/sample roasters

Having said that I cannot help but think that the Hottop would be the most affordable "home" solution... and that one hails from Taiwan

No need to get defensive about Turkey, "I think we can all agree" that Fresh Coffee not only knows which countries have a long coffee heritage but he has been to the factories in most of them to see it first hand and he owns at least 1 Turkish roaster along with a really cool Italian one.  I suspect he was talking about China and Korea.  Those two are fairly new to the coffee arena and are more about building/selling equipment into coffee drinking markets.

I disagree, most of the roasters you listed do not meet the criteria of

commercial sample roaster

and in fact some of the ones you listed dont do a good job of roasting coffee at all and would not be used as commercial sample roasters.

Be careful what you recommend without having tried it first.  I would hate to see a CSr base their $10k purchase on a the results of a google search.

I have played with the two Koreans and roasted a bit on the Turks but havent had any direct experience with any of the Chinese offerings. If you have any experience with the Chinese offerings I would be keen to hear of it as I have always wondered how they compare

As for recommending anything, as per my earlier post, I still think the Hottop would be the way to go

Hi blokes!

Yep dont know where the reference to Turkey came from because that was in my mind as being one of the countries that has been into coffee and roasting for a very long time!

I currently have 2 x Italian roasting machines, 1 x Turkish, 1 x Bitsa, and 1 American purpose built popper (suspect made in China )

The Quest looks like it will do the job I want, Ill do some more looking at it compared to the Hottop but I do think that its slightly better just on first sight.

After 2.5+ years my Corretto is starting to look a bit tired and almost ready for retirement. I decided to take the plunge a week or so ago and ordered a 1kg sample roaster direct from Izmir. After exploring numerous options it basically came down to max. amount of $$ I was willing to spend,  knowing that without regional support there would be an element of risk. A risk you have to be willing to accept if things do not go according to plan. The verdict is still out, will post again when Ahmet arrives.

The Quest is slightly more engineered (more metal) than the Hottop that has a reasonable amount of plastic in non heated areas. Mechanically they will both give many years of service I am sure. Operationally they are fairly different with the Quest being fully manual and the stock Hottops a bit more set and tweak to use.

I have out of interest made my Hottop into virtually a Quest to use and if buying again I would certainly consider the quest with the rider of no local support currently.
