with the rider of no local support
    ...and no Australian electrical approvals
    (an important point often missed)
I suspect that would be true of a good percentage of home roasting setups.

...I decided to take the plunge a week or so ago and ordered a 1kg sample roaster direct from Izmir...

      That would be a Cafemino?
No, not a Toper, its an Akaneks.

My OH just said, no but it exceeds the Australian standards for awesome and kickass  ;D

In seriousness though our home roaster, no doesnt meet most of the standards but he does make sure that the earthing is more than enough so if it decides to go bang the machine itself just goes bang and doesnt make anything else go bang

          Re: Commercial sample roasters...

My new "home" sample roaster arrived last week. At first the boys in our workshop who helped me unload it were a bit suspicious about the whole thing, but now theyre pestering me for fresh coffee.  Ive finally had a chance to play with it. First roast not so good, 500g ended up in the bin. However, things starting to roll along quite nicely now. Here are a few photos and Ive included more information about specs, etc. in the review section.

No worry Buschy as you will need to do a few seasoning roasts anyway...

For mine, you havent roasted until you ditch a few full loads. A brief distraction a few weeks ago and my last 5kg of miel process Aussie MTC was binned as well.

              Re: Commercial sample roasters...

500g of Bali Danau Batur was bad enough, almost brought tears to my eyes when I discharged it into the cooling tray. Was tempted to call the exterminator as it looked like a black beetle  infestation. Moving onto a commercial type roaster is a bit like moving from the ten cent pokies to a gaming table, where the stakes can be much higher. Not looking forward to tossing out a kilo or more of beans! So far so good...

I am sorry to hear that Buschy.

                Chin up...You will get there

coffee_wino (Bruce) has one of these. I am sure that there may be some value in you guys having a chat to get you to some sort of ballpark?

Roasting on a commercial roaster is different to the variety of domestic roasters many here use. We all have our own styles and preferences and you will develop yours too. In the big picture, a few nuked beans is not the end of the world.

I have a 10kg on the way and will deliberately kill 40kg of good stuff to season the drum when its all up and running.

                Enjoy the learning curve...

                Chris

Hey there Ron... glad to hear that Ahmet has arrived safe and sound. Also happy to note that they have taken my suggestions about the motor and electrical panel upgrades on board. Just wanted to let you know that Ahmet will be much happier with a full load on board. Try 1.2kg of green for 1kg of nicely roasted brown. Things tend to happen VERY quickly with lighter loads and you might want to get a few roasts under your belt before playing with smaller batches. Believe it or not but bigger loads are far easier to control

Have fun and thanks for the pics

                  Cheers
