Also looking to insulate - do you need to remove the heating element of the bread maker?
If so, how easy is that to do?

Yep, you'll probably need to take it out or it'll all get tangled up with the fire blanket insulation. Easy enough to do (from memory little terminal plugs at the end of the element) but hardest thing is the insulator mounts - unless you strip the whole thing down they have little nuts on the back that may spin - I ended up using brute force just to strip/twist them out.
