Thanks Mal and Kaffee: I am happy with the look of these Son La beans. This is my first try of them and I am keen to see how they taste... three days rest sound right?
Id rip into em now mate....

You can always do a taste test over time but if you dont start soon, you might be missing out on some great flavours...

In the video is there any need for transferring the beans from the roaster, into the bowl, and then back into the roaster container before putting it on the cooling accessory?

I assume that it was just to show the beans and this would be the step where you transfer to the metal colanders if you didnt have the cooling accessory?

        Hello there,

yes you are right- there is no need to tip into the bowl. However I do usually tip the beans into a container like that- set the pot on the cooler- leave for a twenty seconds or so- and then tip the beans in. I do this to take a little heat out of the base of the pan as quick as possible.

When I did the 250 gram roast I just poured the beans directly into a very large metal colander I have and cooled them outside (it is freezing here at the moment).

Mal: I think I will test out the Son La tonight following your sage advice. I would hate to miss out on ANY flavours. They smell good too... looks like I will be up late again

Hey all, Im just doing my second roast!

This thing is exactly as described and so quiet its amazing. I have to say I am delighted with how it works so far.

I will do a propper review, but 10/10 for ease of use and design. There goes first crack...

And for the record, there is no way in my opinion that this unit will reach teflon off gassing temps in normal use. End of first crack...

                Back in a while!

I shall try over the weekend.

Just finished a fantastic 250g Peruvian roast. For me it worked better than the 150g batches. One thing though, and probably like the other pro-roasters, the cooling cycles demand pulling the roast a little earlier than my usual.

I have a turbo cooler that I built which does the job very well (can cool a batch in less than 60 seconds) which allows me to wait for that first hint of second crack before stopping the roast. If I were using either the cooling cycle or the external cooler (which is not bad), the I would probably stop not long after the end of first crack. I digress...

The 250g roast took just over 15 mins and looks nice and even. We will have to wait for the taste test, but there is no way it will be anything less than great

There is zero smoke out of this unit until halted prematurely for hand cooling - it would be interesting to try and do a full cycle as designed, but I guess that it may take quite a few batches to get it just right!

                    Still happy.

Brilliant: I am very happy to hear of your out of the box success. Truth be told I was confident of the positive reaction as it really is a nicely built machine.

You are quite right about the auto roasting: you need to make an estimate of how far the roast will progress into the cooling cycle. Once you have it dialed in with a particular setting and bean though it works perfectly and is virtually smoke free.

A few hints: the Power button controls pretty much everything.

Once a roast has started a single press will start the cooling cycle early. Two presses resets the roast timer to add time to a roast. Hold the button down for a few seconds and it stops the roaster completely for manual cooling.

The preheat function is operated by setting the dial to preheat and pressing the power button once. The cooling and preheat cycles share the same LED indicator lamp. For preheat it is on constantly, during the cool cycle it flashes.

                      Happy Roasting!

Oh, the glass dome can be removed for periodic cleaning. To do so open the dome and remove the pin in the hinge. It slides out. I use a little windex to keep it clean. After a dozen roasts or so it gets a little smoky.

The chaff catcher gets 99.8% of the chafff- but a little chaff dust ends up at the bottom of the roaster- around the air inlet. I periodically use the vacuum cleaner to suck this out having loosened it with a brush.

excellent review, looks well designed and quality construction.
would like to see way to control temperature.

how does the smoke vaporizer work ?

There is a heating element in the chimney whose sole purpose seems to be to burn off any oils and carbon (ie smoke!)

This looks like the kind of Roaster i am looking for. I want something that can be packed away is compact and easy to use and clean. I am not so interested in experimenting with profiles as i can only taste nice coffee not all the different flavours that the expert tasters can. Is the special still available.
