Thanks Gra, no doubt they are a great roaster, new thermocouple arrived today and the 2nd roast which was the KJM blend is at day 4 and just getting better with every day!
I need to offload some coffee so I can roast some more!!

It would be good to have regular updates on your roasting results
I wonder it coffee makes good fish or crab bait : (just a thought)
Continuing to get great roasts out of the KKTO, the only issue I am having is getting good numbers out of my thermocouple in the bean mass, I am seeing much lower temps than I would expect.
Typically 1C is starting at around 135 deg and max temp reached by the end of the roast is 175 deg. Probe is coming thru the side and into the bean mass, its reading ambient correctly and if I run the KKTO empty is ramps up to 230 deg + as I would expect.
Am I incorrect in expecting it to register a bean mass temp of around 200 deg for 1C ??
Yep, I dont doubt the actual internal Bean temp is much higher, what i am trying to understand is why the discrepancy!
Its not probe position as its low in the bean mass, thru the side of the KKTO, and its not the software/meter refresh rate as it works fine as an environmental meter.
I wonder if its actually measuring the temp of the metal in the KKTO where the thermocouple is fitted?? Its an interference fit thru a drilled out hole in the steamer basket in the KKTO so I guess its possible??
If in doubt to isolate the probe you can use some ceramic or woven/braided fiber Hi Temp tubing, like the ones used inside espresso machines that is used to protect wires from heat exposure
I have my probe coming up from underneath the pot and was having issues getting the temperatures that I thought I should be getting, so I measured temperatures in various places all over my KKTO:
The temperatures underneath the bean pot were quite a bit lower than the temperatures in the beans, by as much as 35oC in some cases. The temperature next to the bean pot were also lower by as much as 20oC. These variations will depend greatly on your design and especially on the degree of insulation you have.
If you are using the stainless steel probe the temperature will be decreased by conduction of heat through the probe and down to the cooler areas either at the side or below the pot. I have tried to get more accurate readings by redesigning a temperature probe that has the junction fully exposed (sticking out of the end of a stainless steel tube) and directly in contact with the beans.
This works better as far as I can tell, on most beans I seem to get 1st-C between 185 and 195oC, and 2nd-C around the 210 to 215oC.
I dont think my measurements are perfectly accurate and I dont think it is overly important, as long as your setup is consistent and gives you the results you need. It is worth while trying to get fairly accurate temperature figures though, or you cant compare what you are doing to what others are doing.
The previous roaster build that I had gave readings that were about 4oC higher than I get with this build, and that is with exactly the same thermocouple and CS DMM.
So the take home message from my perspective is to get as close as practical to real bean temperatures by moving the probe around, or even using different types of probes as KK suggests. And make sure your setup gives consistent results.
I use the stainless braided temp probe. It runs down the inside of the inner pot and is screwed to the bottom, just outside the reach of the double sided agitator.
All temps with it in this position are spot on, and its about the same speed / sensitivity as the old Jaycar one I used to have which were prone to breaking after a while.
It also works well with small roasts as it sits on the bottom of the bean mass.
I now have the new thermocouple installed and working well, roasted a 500g blend this afternoon and went a little darker than i typically do - just into second crack.
Also learnt to hear the cracks by taking KKs advice and stepping back a metre or so.
