            Re: Another Happy KKTO Owner

            Thanks for posting bcspark.

Thats a great looking roasting station you got there.
Looks like theres no way those beans are breaking out of jail

The KKTO looks like a splitting image of mine with the fire blanket.

            Questions,
Do u get beans wedged between the probe and the wall of the roaster and getting stuck at times?

What temperatures are you reading at the start of first crack and start of second crack?

            Thanks again,

            Gary at G

              Re: Another Happy KKTO Owner

Hi Gary . I had some trouble with been backup when the prop was vertical.Set the angle with bottom of probe toward flow of bean in agitation.Have had no trouble since. Starting 600grm roast at approx 60degrees 1st crack is between198&212 depending on bean variety.2nd arrives around 220deg give and take. I have noticed a lack of heat control in first part of roast. Have begun mod of fan and element to cut out unit thermostat. Will post pics and explanation when complete. I pick up toggle switches today . Thanks. bcspark

                Re: Another Happy KKTO Owner

                Cheers bcspark,

Will see how you mod the oven to bypass the thermostat and installation of the toggle switch, and compare it to Borat123s mod.

Then will get a qualified electrician to carry out the mod for safety reasons.

                Looking forward to more pics.

Gary, I think he mentioned earlier that he is  . I also am very interested, although my main focus at the moment is with having full control over the lower element.

Certainly would be great if i was just around the corner from him.
Being in WA, i would either have to find a KKTO owner who is qualified as a sparkie, or find a sparkie and show him the provided circuit diagram so that he knows what im on about.

"Err ahem, is that the sparkie? I want you to modify my turbo oven" Sparkie replies " A turbo what? Just for making me confused Ill charge you a confused fee so that i can drown out my confuseness with beer"

Ring ring, " Sparkies not in right now so please leave your name and number so we can get back to you perhaps in a month or two..." :

Hi, have completed mod now have manual control over fan and element.Considered using simmerstat for heating ,could have fitted plenty of room, but concerned on heat factor as one fan extracts up and out.I left the handle switch and thermister in circuit for safety reasons.Timing and temperature readings are by CS data logger and computer. On the fans you have one in the upper controls section blowing up and one as a fan forced heat source blowing down for bean heat both on one motor.Ascan be seen in pics I am preparing to do first roast will give report later.   bcspark

                          Re: Another Happy KKTO Owner

I have been testing my heating modification ore several roasts of varying green varieties. My findings are : leave fan running control bean temperatue via on/off switch to a rise of approximately 10 deg / minute till beans reach130-140 deg. From this point the beans control their own temp intake @ 10 deg/min to first crack averaging 15 minutes around 108-114 deg.Control of applied heat to 2-4 deg can extend 2 nd crack to around  224 deg at about 18 min.I take many of my roasts to 226-230 deg at 219-20 mins. These are average results and Iam continuing with my trials. I am over the moon with my results.  bcspark another happy KKTO owner

                              Re: Another Happy KKTO Owner

                              Nice work bcspark

I have yet to do the modification of my oven to run manually, but thus far i have bought roast times down on my unit by widening the heat guard holes out by 1mm, and bending the fan blades forwards by 30 degrees more than the previous 90 degrees.

This means more air is drawn up from the middle,  and then blown down the sides of the roast chamber, in other words, more efficient convection.

The beans were already evenly roasted prior, but this mod makes it even more so.

Batch of 700gm greens now down to 20 minutes, saving 2-3 minutes.

As soon as i can "frankstein" the oven sometime this week, i can do the drying phase til 155 degrees, then ramp up the heat til first crack, then turn down and coast til 2nd crack, all done manually and monitored via the DMM logger.

Certainly has wife approval factor. Hardly any chaff. Its all contained in the outer chamber, vacuumed up after every roast.

My quibble is its tricky getting the pot centred so that the arm can turn smoothly. Takes about 15 seconds to correct it.

Best roaster ive had so far.

                                Re: Another Happy KKTO Owner

Gary, information that may/may not help you. I do not run the element guard at all and with the centering bit I have 3 holes drilled out in the lowest ring of holes where I have inserted stainless Allan headed bolts, washers, nuts. This means that I drop the colander in and the bolt arrangement centralises it. I only have to spin the blade by hand to engage it and I am ready to go.
