  • I have to say I'm a little amazed, (maybe I should try a few more roasts before I say anything) I did a 400g roast of the Ghimbi and 2 days later we're drinking it (ran out of coffee), sure it's a little grassy but other than that it tastes great, so so so much better than any of the Ghimbi roasts I've done in the past 2 years and and majority of them were rested.

I'm following the same pattern as I did for the 100g. I can't wait to try some of my other beans, I might go through the remaining 15kg much quicker than I thought, I'm going to do a blend today.

Yes the panel has always been unreadable in the sun.

Ventilation and odour, seriously, you are roasting beans, how can you expect there to not be an odour, personally I love it (BF doesn't so much) but that's just me

I roast in the sunroom, technically still inside, I used to roast in the kitchen though with the exhaust fan on. My kitchen I'll do as I please, plus BF pulls apart engines in the lounge so I think it's justified

        • Problem is I'm in "her" kitchen and whilst she loves the smell (and taste) of roasted coffee, after my corretto the smell of roasting coffee (and smoke) would not be allowed indoors.

But, did a batch under the range hood yesterday, minimal odour leakage into the living room. Very happy

          • L M A O tell her 'priorities dude, if you want the coffee you need to give a little'.

I want the rotary in my car, I have to 'put up with' car parts all over the lounge and in the dishwasher.

'put up with' is said in cheek mind you, I just don't give a rats, everything can be cleaned up!

Just about to do a 400g blend, will be interesting to see how it comes out.

Now there's a combo I could easily live with … behmor in the kitchen and chook-cooker in the shed. Both snap & crackle on the dump

              • Thanks for this, Andy. I feared it was a defect in the control panel. Our first roasts from the new machine are wonderful. Happy to have found you on Coffee Snobs.

                • Is anyone aware when the Behmor 1600 Plus will become available again in BeanBay.

                  Cheers.

                  • BeanBay is already aware of it. A read of the the product page advises:

                    ### NOTE ####
Due to huge Australian demand we have sold out of the Behmor.
The factory is building another container of Aussie spec roasters

                    • If anyone is out there reading this thread and not knowing if it's really worth it buying the upgrade panel 'can it really make such a difference?', I can tell you it does. I've only changed one thing so far and the coffee I'm producing far outweighs anything produced previously with the old panel. Plus who doesn't like free shipping

                          Hi Deano

I put it onto manual mode P5 and at the first sound of first crack I press P4 to go to 75%, I then wait until I actually have more than one bean at first crack and press C to get the 'rosetta stone' setting happening, most of the time I have to hit cool before time is up but it's never too far off the end.

Even though there are all the actions above to take, there is still only one real change and that is the drop in temperature at first crack.

I now have completed my upgrade and have 10 or so roasts completed. I agree with you shapeshifter but have been dropping my power level to 50% at first crack, hitting rosetta for 3min 10 sec on the clock and producing some great results.

Has anyone noticed that when you hit P5 for 100% manual the heating elements stay on all the time (as one would expect) but if you use P1 or P2 auto which should heat at 100% for all or nearly all of the roast that the elements will begin to oscillate on and off about 1/3 of the way into the roast giving you a different profile.
So if you select P5 manual early in the roast much more heat appears to be delivered to the beans than if you use the auto settings.
Not saying this is a fault just something I have noticed.

Many of my roasts I am now using 300g of beans on setting 400g P2B, roast time 20min, at 10 min select P5, wait for first crack, hit P3(50%) and C for rosetta of 3min 10 sec
I find C1 always starts before the 15min mark so never have to worry about "the 30sec count down"
I am liking my roasts and many of the new features fun experimenting!

Amazing what you can do with the new Behmor control system, almost play a tune...

                              • I've ended up doing a reversible mod on the base model and running the elements through a dimmer. 0-100% controllable power with a $10 device (which I can run the popper through as well!) so will never be looking back as the value proposition is for the moment unbeatable.

Thanks a lot for sharing the trick around pressing P1/P2 mid roast to get the wall / exhaust temperature, I had no idea I could do that.
