Dennis I know the type of company 2mcm refers to.
I had dealings with one over a DVD recorder.
They blatently ignored Consumer Affairs after being contacted by them on my behalf.
They hide behind no published physical address and contact is usually only via email.
Unfortunately there are too many entities like that these days.
Add an overseas manufacturer into the equation with no local office and what chance does the unwary consumer have?
Ah, I love it when people compare apples to oranges.

The company who have successfully bid for the genes dont sell dvd recorders to my knowledge.
I have had dealings with them and they have been prompt, very courteous, competitively priced, and do have a physical address.
How they intend to market the gene is probably only known to them - who knows...maybe they already have a deal with a large retailer?

TG, you beat me to it. Look out for bargain-priced, unsold, unsellable stock of Gene Cafe roasters in the coming months. Someone hasnt crunched the numbers too well.

Yep, I too know the type of company.... they rely on large a large number of sales (mmmm 1000 is pretty big) often at what appears to be an unbelievable price (working out of a small warehouse somewhere).... they employ almost zero staff.... and dont bother with such things as support or any form of after sales service..... nor do they stock spares..... that all costs money and takes up valuable storage room....

To the consumer it (at first) appears to be great..... and IF nothing goes wrong that feeling of euphoria might last..... but at the first sign of a problem..... you cant contact the organisation and the whole purchase goes really pear shaped in a BIG way!!! You are then out of pocket big time :-[

This type of dealer makes those selling goods on Evilbay look like the best retailers in the world : :

    1000 per annum = 83+ per month.

I also dont like their chances.

I wonder how long theyll last before Genesis pull the plug.

There may even be a chance to pick up some very cheap units when they go under (albeit with possibly no warrant support).

One thing is for sure.... the new "sole distributor" doesnt know his potential market very well....

Just think about how many people are interested in roasting their own coffee.... most of whom would already be members of CoffeeSnobs Id wager...

Now our membership stands at <2300.... of which quite a few are overseas members.... and of the rest, a lot dont / dont intend to roast..... And then you take a significant percentage of those who do roast - and do so with home made gear and have no intention of buying a commercial roaster (like me)...

So where is he/she going to sell this mythical 1000 which has been promised? Who ever he/she is they dont know the business very well.... and therefore I would have serious reservations dealing with them on that point alone (not an issue as Im not in the market in any case).

Well, I guess it was good while it lasted...if this keeps up we might end up roasting on a sheet of metal over some hot coals with a shovel.

2mcm - I think its understandable for you to be frustrated, though making a remark like, "questionable warranty style company" seems a bit unfair, and not the first time Ive seen or heard you say this. Is this scare mongering or do you have any evidence of this?

All part of master conspiracy plan ! Between the home coffee roasting manufactures from around the world.

Im glad I bought a Gene from you yesterday, I probably would not have bought one under protest, especially with the dramas I have had with the other manufacturer ( Harry Potter Roaster)

started a topic Gene cafe availability

    Gene cafe availability

CSers will know that until recently, the Gene Cafe was not available in Australia. Many owners purchased overseas.

A few months ago, Serge Siboni of GoBarista negotiated successfully with Genesis, Korea and supply of the Gene cafe was established in Australia. Serge most generously has appointed Talk Coffee, The Coffee Barun and a Sydney dealer as well. A significant number of CSers are now happy owners of Gene cafe.

As Serge will be overseas for the next few weeks, Talk Coffee stocked up on Gene Cafe and recently received the last six units from current stock.

On attempting to order further stock, Genesis has refused supply to Serge as they have decided to appoint a sole distributor of another company- or so it appears. Some prospective purchasers have mentioned this name when discussing the Gene Cafe with me.

Serge informs me that the company concerned have entered into an undertaking to purchase and sell 1000 Gene Cafe roasters in the coming year and for this reason, Serge has been refused supply by Genesis unless he also commits to purchase 1000 units- clearly not feasible as a CSer is the primary market for Gene Cafe.

This means that at present, that the only remaining stock of Gene Cafe is with Talk Coffee and Coffee Barun (if Mark still has stock).

It would appear that the new sole distributor has locked out GoBarista- either knowingly or unknowingly- based on sales volumes which are highly unfeasible in Australia and I believe that they will fail in their endeavour to move such large numbers of roasters. Serge has indicated that he will not be purchasing stock from them and therefore we are in a tough place..

I cannot see that the new distributor will be able to meet their commitment, but respectfully request that CSers support your sponsors and refuse to support the new player who has refused to work with Serge. Hopefully, this situation will resolve itself in the short-term and supply will resume.

Why is it sooooo hard with roasters??  First Hottop, now Genesis....:
