        How's the roasting going Nick?

I've decided that my stock TO from Kmart is a little underpowered compared to others - either it's individually sub-par or the ones that Kmart sell are overall not as good. Struggle to get 600g of a harder bean much past 203/4... so I think I'm gonna modify mine. Given you've got a few turbo ovens, what are you currently roasting with and how is it modified?

[Eventually my neighbour and I are going to open my TO up and wire in a TC4 to control the element and hopefully reduce the nasty deadband that's causing me to stall right around first crack...]

          Readeral,
I also have the same underpowered Kmart oven.
Despite modification to the heat guard, it struggles to roast 600gm greens to 22 minutes, with only a 1-2 deg per minute ROR at first crack, and with medium grown beans to boot.
I dont do hard beans on the KKTO, they belong to the coretto at this stage.
From what I read, the Rank Arena oven is a good one, not sure where to get them from though. Looking for one at the moment.

Yeah finding the Rank Arena is a total PITA, because they've released the new one with the attached arm. Still, looking around for some sort of 1400W oven is the ideal.

JB Hifi have a Tiffany Turbo Oven, rated at 1400W, advertised for $49 on their website.
It might be worth a look, as it looks a lot like the Rank Arena one.

Champion. Last I looked in JB Hifi (like 6 months ago) it was a solid element one, rather than a halogen. I wonder what they're currently selling. It's a bummer I'm in Hobart at the moment where JB Hifi doesn't have any home appliances. Will hit them up as soon as I get back to Sydney though.

Rank Arena were sold by Deals direct online store.
Trick is to open it up and have a look. JB let you do that, unlike other online stores where it may be hit or miss.
The Sunbeam one is not powerful enough.
My deal dot com have the Heller brand TO. This is another good brand, I think KK had one of these before the Rank Arena came out.

I just looked closer at the JB image, it's definitely a solid element. I've read in the threads that there was mixed opinion about the move to the halogen style elements, but that seems to have been the status quo since. Is there any 'gotchas' with the solid element, aside from the adjustment lag (in comparison to the halogens)? Might even be a plus rather than a gotcha..

Heller is also solid element - but more expensive than the Tiffany. Have you tried the Sunbeam Bosco? I saw them for the first time in Myer over Christmas - struck me as an odd thing for Sunbeam to have on range given the plethora of new electronic stand based ones.

                    • The Sunbeam is rated at 1200W, the Rank Arena is 1400W.
I would look at the product in person, as I believe they all use the same photo on the websites mentioned.
Might be worth having a look in Myers and DJ to see what they have.
