  • Popcorn chaff going back into the vents

    Hello roasters

    I’ve only played with coffee roasting every now and then and used a Kmart popcorn maker which after couple uses stopped working. That was years ago but now I bought a target popper and notice that the chaff flies out and some of it wants to go back into the vents of the popcorn maker. Now I’m wondering could this be bad for it that it could go inside and blow the thing. Anyway to make sure the chaff is filtered out?

    Roasting coffee in a popper is a great "proof of concept", it proves you can roast coffee, it's fun and the results can be great. However it's rarely a method that you will keep using. The volume is small, the noise is loud, it has little control and it's super messy.

    You are right, you really don't want too much of this going back into the popper, at best it will overheat the popper, at worst it might be a fire risk and I think any amount of fly-screens to avoid it sucking chaff will add to the heat problem by blocking too much airflow.

    I would suggest popper roasting on a veranda which will allow a gentle breeze to blow the chaff into the garden.

      thankyou Andy for your response. Just what I suspected and you’ve just confirm that for me. I do go outside in cold Canberra to use the popper. I actually have a cheap fan lying around which can help blow the chaff away. Cheers damir

        Yeah, the low fan to blow the chaff into the garden is your best bet.

        It won't have to be too close (chaff is light!) and the cooler air around the popper will extend roast times a little which should also improve the roast control.

        You might like it better!

          btw I’ve just ordered some decaf and Brazil beans off your shop.

          i think you’ll be horrified but I actually don’t drink coffee, it affects my tummy and I’ve had bad experiences years ago. But maybe the decaf might be ok being low acidity, no caffeine etc. anyway I’ll try roasting for my wife and my in-laws who love their moka coffee being Italian en all. They are Nespresso drinkers so this may give them something different.

          I fill my void by drinking and brewing beer instead - cheers and have a good night!
