Re: Can I attach a thermocouple here?

Just a thought - I have the same Aldi drill stand and was going to mount my HG the same way you have, but thought that the clamp holding the nozzle of the gun might get a bit hot. I ended up cable tying it to the handle of the press for the long reach to avoid this. Let me know if it gets too hot! If not, I might give that a go.

I have the same Aldi stand

If you use the same clamp method for holding the heat gun as Crema has
and need sliding height adjustment as required for heat control try reversing the handle

To avoid burning ones hands and have up/down adjustment

You can reverse the handle it so it sticks out the other end and not over the heat of the BM
You can do this in two ways
      1) slightly longer bolt to post end (3 to 4 mil)
      2) or drill larger hole on front end of handle to use the current shorter bolt

      And just put it together
I am sure this a good safe mod

Yeah, that thought passed my mind, but my concern is still the nozzle frying the clamp

Clamp is alloy and should take the heat

But if you want to play it safe
          Get some wide hair ribbon
Thinly cover it with silicone on both sides (one side at a time) and let each side dry
Wrap the HG nozzle with it and that will provide an insulating barrier

Heya cremakid, love the setup. Have you tried roasting yet or giving it a dry run with the heatgun, and has your probe survived?

I went out tonight to purchase one but was wary of the thermocouple melting after 230*C and couldnt think of a way to insulate a probe - yours looks great.

Also, are Aldi still selling the drill stand? Or am I too late?

Bunnings also sell a drill stand very similar to the Aldi one for about $13 Id.... Mightnt be much use to you if you dont live near a Bunnings though.... :

yeah, I went to all the trouble to insulate it and was getting ready to do my roast next day when I thought I would give it all a dry run. Would you believe the thermocouple was st**fed!

When I bought it the neg and pos ends on the plug were bent slightly and wouldnt fit in the DMM. So I bent them slightly to fit. Looks like they were damaged at the start but I cant prove it and buying off the net which I hate makes it difficult for warranty. Cheaper and easier to get a ten buck one at Jaycar.

There has not been much that I have bought in the last 40 years that hasnt been a lemon. That includes my first car, washing machine and a drier, various (many) other appliances and lately a Sunbeam coffee machine and a Rocky grinder that I returned and got refunds.

So, I now have one of the flexible TCs with the little wire end protruding from the insulation and I ran it down alongside a tent peg (for stability) and coverered it with insulating sleeving from Jaycar (just to make sure it was really insulated) with just the tip exposed.

All seems to be working well so at least my DMM is OK. I will give my first Coretto roast a try either today or tomorrow.

Getting the software working properly is another story.

What is the problem with the software?

                    Cheers

KK, do you think could I use that silicone goo idea to cover the thermocouple? Could I directly apply the silicone thickly to the probe and wire?

If so, what sort of silicone would I need to buy please? The only sort I know of is the stuff used to seal bathrooms :-[

Maybe nothing maybe it is me. Its just that what I have on screen does not represent what I have seen from other CSers examples they have posted eg the minutes showing at the bottom. I now believe I have to do some modifying in Excel to do this or it only applies to the saved profile not to the current roast at the time.
I guess I can live without the minutes actually showing on the graph but the other prob is when the temp is displayed on the graph I actually have a double image of the temp figures eg one black and one red.
Anyway, maybe I just dont need to be watching the graph while roasting, just the large boxes at bottom left with "Temp Now" etc. Now when I think about it, that is all I really need to do, DERR!! :-[ I just like looking at pretty moving pictures.

Any silicone is ok but automotive silicone is the best and yes it should do the job if you could get a sheet of fibreglass fabric or ribbon it would last forever

For sure, and if you can, get either the "Silastic" or "Sikaflex Sikasil" brands...... These are the real thing and will out-perform the generics and cheapies,

                            Mal.

Agree with Silastic Mal. Just to clarify on Sikaflex though, they are actually polyurethanes, Sika do make silicones under the Sikasil branding.
