  • Hottop filters

Geeze, these filters are getting expensive!
I started off paying about $12.50 for the rear ones, steady increases over the years now have them at around $33.
I know, I know, I'm starting to sound like my father now
Interested if any Hottop owners have found an alternative or just sucking it up like me and getting on with enjoying the process?

    Cheers,
    Mal

Do a search on hottop filter replacements. There have been a few attempts, including putting them through the dishwasher.

I did an experiment with extractor filter paper in 2010. But I think my final advice was to rather source genuine replacements.

    This is the original thread:

Thanks Graham, I had already searched and read your thread, and since it hadn't been updated for a while thought I would test the waters again. Thanks for you response. Mal

$33 dollars is robbery, (and deservers some Ozzy innovation).
I noticed that the filters don't block up evenly around 5 years ago, (when I could get them for A$12.00).
It's easy to unclip the filter paper baskets and rotate the filter paper 180 degrees, make sure all clips are "clipped".
    That doubles the life.
Finally when they look evenly blocked, unclip again, wash carefully by hand in running water and rinse until they run clear.
    Dry, resemble, clip.
You should get at least 3 times the life.
Keep the washed old dried filters, and you can make new patchwork ones from cut up pieces.
They are not precision devices as long as your roast profiles remain on track they are filtering / blocking.
The top filter casing can be reloaded with a suitable, (not to fine / not too corse) stainless steel chemical free scourer pad - it's now washable and should last forever.
Roast outside and wear a Covid mask or similar - even with brand new filters.
Covid masks are now available for free everywhere, (stock up while you can).

The Hottop relies on partial airflow blockage from the filters so you need some filtration or your roast curves will need compensation.
