  • Coffs Harbour

    Hi all

We are going north for a few days and are seeking recommendations for cafes around Bellingen (where well be staying) or places like Coffs which are reasonably close. I dont think this area has been covered yet in other posts.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Re: Bellingen - Coffs Harbour

Last time I was there I had a coffee at the Old Butter Factory Cafe and thought it was OK.

Ive just done a Google search and another one that looks OK is Tuckshop on Hyde St Bellingen (I havent been there). It serves Campos coffee.

Not sure of the name of the place- opposite IGA and uses a La Marzocco. Possibly best coffee Ive had.

              Re: Bellingen - Coffs Harbour

              Just to report back.

The best coffee is to be had at the place across the road from the IGA (thanks Telemaster).  The place is called Vintage Espresso and the coffee is from a newish Sydney roaster called Caffe Di Gabriel.  Had my usual strong flat whites and macchiato and it was consistently good (although I think the best barista was on during the week).  The food was also excellent.

The Tuckshop was just okay but nowhere near as good as going to Campos itself.  By far the worst experience was at a place called Sis De Lane in Church St - they were using Toby Estate East Timor coffee and unfortunately the result was truly awful (very sour and bitter).   One of the locals recommended the Gelato Bar (the gelato is very good by the way and the decor is good fun) where they use Mokador - but when we tried to go there for coffee no one appeared to want to serve us.  We waited at the counter for about 5 minutes - the owner finally appeared looked around, muttered something under his breath and disappeared again not to re-appear - so we left (10 am on a Saturday morning was obviously just too early for him).

We also tried Piccolo to Go at the Palm Shopping Centre in Coffs Harbour.   The coffee was good but the location leaves a lot to be desired.   Its basically just a coffee cart (with paper cups only) inside a fairly low rent shopping centre with a great view of the Big W entrance.

In all though Bellingen is a great place - great food at No 2 Oak Street restaurant and the Federal Hotel.

                Coffs Harbour

Well I am heading off for a week in Coffs soon and I am already getting sweaty palms as I dont know if there is a descent drop there. Are there any good coffee shops there? Please lay my mind at rest

                  Re: Coffs Harbour

Its been a few years since I was in Coffs (my nana lived there most of her 93 years) so no recent knowledge.

However, last time I was there the coffee was OK to me at the time at a little place in the mall near the Commonwealth Bank.
From the bank turn left into the mall and its at the other end of the mall.
Nothing special but better than GJs.

                  Good luck with the hunt.

                    Sawtell near Coffs Harbour

A week ago I spent two and a half days in the little former fishing village of Sawtell about 10 minutes drive south of Coffs Harbour.  While there I had several light meals at a coffee place called Shimmers on First (the main street).  As it had a good selection of well prepared, gluten free food, which 3 out of 4 of my lot require, we were very happy.

The real suprise however was the coffee. The placarding indicated that the beans were from a Sydney roaster, Caffe di Gabriel which I did not know.  The signboard invited customers to try the current SO, a Nicaraguan which I hadnt previously encountered.  When I looked behind the counter they had a LM machine and a LM Swift.  I tried both the SO and the house blend and they were excellent, with the house blend being outstanding (on two separate days with different baristas) with a beautiful chocolate and caramel mouthful which persisted without any bitterness, just continuing smooth chocolate notes.   The current owner is selling to market the di Gabriel beans more widely in the region so I hope that this really excellent place survives the transition.

Yes, Artisti has a good rep but the shop isn't exactly in a prime location (kind of unfortunate).

Treeo in the main street of Sawtell is good, along with a couple of the Bellingen cafes (names of which elude my memory).

Enjoy that beautiful part of the world.

This is almost making me yearn for home (one of those addresses was on my 1980s paper round ). Haven't been back in nearly 20 years. Coffee was pretty dire back then, but I guess that isn't specific to the town. I'll send my sister in to try these places.
