  • Townsville Coffee

Are there any Nth QLd snobs around?
We are going to be up at Townsville for a few days and then Magnetic Island for a week and I was hoping not to have to go cold turkey
Any recommendations for a good espresso?

    Re: Townsville Coffee

Yup. Just noticed this thread and perhaps a bit too late for your trip. Probably the most well known shop in Townsville is Coffee Dominion downtown. Its just off the Flinders Mall across from the "sugar shaker". Holiday Inn. They roast there own beans and have knowledgeable staff. They even offer an Espresso Academy on Thursday nights, of which I am a graduate  . I walked passed the shop the other day and happened to see a brand new GPP Pro sitting on the display shelf waiting for a new owner. Pretty rare to see these things in TSV.

I actually lived on Maggie for 5 years but cant really reccommend anywhere. However, that was a while back and perhaps times have changed. Sorry, cant help you with that one... Perhaps the coffee might not end up being up to scratch but the island will make up for it in other ways.

The missus and I just bumped into this one and I had a great double espresso and the missus had the best frappe she has had. Don't expect food but expect a great coffee.

It is the best in Townsville but others are picking up their game which is a good thing.

So, has anything changed in Townsville? Coffee Dominion still seems to be the best, but Millie J's (I think it's called) just across the mall was OK last time I went there. Fuel Cafe at Belgian Gardens was good today as well.

Any further suggestions from the Townsville-ites?

I went the end of last year and tried pretty much all that was available in Townsville. I have to say i still think Coffee domination was the best.

Yeah have to agree with you there. Not to say Coffee domination is bad but there was another place opened across the road from it called the Quarters and i was looking forward to trying it out. To be honest pretty disappointed when i did. Admittedly I only had the one but it was enough to say Coffee domination was better. I must say i have noticed a few more pop up and even coffee vans operation up there. All in all at least there is some decent coffee as like i said every time i went to Coffee domination it was good. I will say though coming from Melbourne there are many places i would rate higher than it but also a lot of places down here i would rate well below also. It really depends on what your expectations are.

                Cheers,

                Chris

No, I like Coffee Dominion. In fact, I bought a small bag of their Venezia Primo Costa Rican Blend the other day and had some this afternoon. I liked it. I think coffee shops are popping up everywhere nowadays. We've had three new ones open up here in Charters Towers during the past 12 months (none of them sensational) and Charters Towers is a small town. People seem to think selling coffee is a matter of buying a machine and putting coffee through it, and the results show that I think.

The same has happened to Cairns, I frequent up there as my parents live there so and also come down to Townsville as i have a friend from work down here who has a place on Magnetic Island. I have to say since coming up to Cairns and going to Townsville both places for FNQ have seen more competition. Which i think is a good thing as everyone is trying to out do each other and if they are trying to do that, you would hope they would ensure they make the best possible coffee available.

Here's fingers and toes crossed for that! Attracting baristas with the skills needed to produce quality would be tough I would imagine.

Jam Corner on Palmer St has been pretty good most times... I have had a few not-so-great cups, but mostly very good.

I'm going to throw in what I think is a very good cafe. It is in a newsagent, which is unusual, but the coffee is fantastic. "NewsPlus Cafe" I think rivals quite a few of the cafes in Townsville. They use "Tim Adams" beans and this guy has a strong passion for the coffee. Again, looks wise, you would not think, but it is worth the effort to check it out! Address: 278 Ross River Road. Next to the "Miss India" indian takeway...

NewsPlus has closed down. I talked to Ryan there last year and he was thinking of moving and just doing coffee, no news agency... Anyone know if he's set up anywhere yet, or can you post here when you find out?
