      Re: Melbourne CBD

We went to a little place called "The little Mule" in Somerset place just off little Bourke st up from Elizabeth but before you get to BBB.
The coffee is from Sydney and as I have come to expect good coffee is always down the back lanes.
Shares its space with a bike shop and uses jars as glasses.
Check it out when your next in the city

I finally made it to the Dancing Goat and I really enjoyed the coffee as well as the food.

The guys there are really passionate and knowledgeable.

I also bought their blend for home and its magic. Highly recommend this cafe.

Dancing Goat is a great little place, very underrated.

Jesse is a great bloke (the Collingwood supporter thing aside ), is very talented, passionate and has an ability to interact with all his customers (something a number of quality baristi cant do).

I finally dropped in there this morning and was very impressed with the new setup.

Its amazing what they can do with such a small space.

Speaking of small spaces, also dropped in to the excellent Cup Of Truth and noticed theyve started using David Makins Axil Coffee.
First time ive seen it around town.

                Re: Melbourne CBD

I visited BBB late last year as I happened to be in the city early one morning.

I thought Id try the espresso, and I was pretty disappointed.

It seemed to me (the untrained palate) that it was crazily sour, with not much else able to be detected.
They were busy, so I didnt think to mention it to them.

Is this just a one-off situation?

                  It depends on ones palate.
Some swear by BBB as the oracle of coffee, others, like me, dont find it works for my palate.

Ive noticed that at times they cut their shots incredibly short, sometimes as little as 15ml appears to be in the cup.
I assume that happens because theyve become so popular and thus are constantly rushed so perhaps, deliberately or not, they take the odd shortcut to get the coffees out in good time.

Having said all that, it appears to be easily the most popular coffee place in the CBD so they must be doing something right, just not for my particular palate.

I doubt its to save time... it is a bad Melbourne habit from many (maybe most) places.

My standard order is a double espresso, in Melbourne that is often delivered as 15-20ml. Cmon Missta Barista, gimme a double that is 50ml.

Put it back in the roaster! Another trend in Melbourne over the last couple of years is to roast very light and then sell it as "citrus"... one persons citrus is most peoples sour.

Its great to be spoilt for choice in Melbourne, I really recommend not just following the "hip crowd to the groovy place" and try and find something that suits your own palate.

There is plenty of great coffee in Melbourne but sometimes it can be a little like the 3 bears... too dark, too light, just right.

Certainly becoming a bad trend to my palette too in certain places in Melbourne. Covered a little here http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1287710242

Like a more fully roasted option 65 degrees and their Gridlock blend is well worth a go.

Dropped in to BBB on the weekend, during a quick trip to Melb.

Extremely tiny little place, and bee hive like busy.   I tried a macchiato from one of their ethiopian blends, and the missus had a latte.   Nice, quality coffee but not outstanding.

They do have nice cakes though....

I dropped into Padres latest venture, The League Of Honest Coffee, this morning.

Its on Exploration Lane (but fronts onto Little Lonsdale Street, near the corner of Exhibition Street) and theyve found themselves a lovely open spaced venue and theyve decorated it superbly, right down to a beautiful motif on the roof.

Theyve got a superb looking green Slayer, are running three Mazzers (i think), their house blend and two single origins along with the usual 7-8 other beans for retail sale.

Staff are very friendly, as youd expect from Padre, and theyre even got iPads to take orders.

The CBDs been crying out for another open spaced, airy yet stylish venue so hopefully Padre continue delivering in the cup.

I had the same experience at 65 Degrees (mind you, id never even contemplate adding sugar).
With their outstanding pedigree and reputation in mind i gave them a few visits and whilst i could tell the coffee was of excellent quality and was well extracted, it did little for my palate and i also wasnt a fan of the vibe of the building.
Sorry to quote myself but i was in the area this morning so gave 65 Degrees another shot and this time i was truly wowed, not only by the simply outstanding coffee but also by their efficiency.
They were busy, as always, yet i had my coffee within no more than a minute of ordering.

Very, very impressed and so glad that ive finally been able to get 65 Degrees coffee.

Had a bit of time to kill this morning so found myself walking up and down the main streets of Melbourne CBD until I came across Social Roasting Company at 5 Mckillop Street, Melbourne.  Had a great espresso, the barista was very approachable, highly knowledgeable and very happy to have a chat.  Great little cafe, funky music off the main drag. Well worth a look.
