I'm not exactly qualified to comment on the upper echelons of coffee, but I can talk about what I think is up there somewhere.

I was in Melbourne over Easter and stopped in at Via Batisti. The food was great, the staff were friendly and the coffee was the best I've had; sweet-ish, tasty, syrupy espressos and smooth nutty flavours coming out in the lattes (and really nice art, if it matters).

The food was presented really well too.

Like I said, I'm a neophyte here, but I can say with authority that it's where I'll be headed next time I'm back on the peninsula.
