Thanks for everyone's help. My better half has convinced me to just suffer through drip coffee for a month and put the funds towards a proper upgrade instead.

I'm looking to sell a Gaggia Classic <18 months old. Will send a PM

Maybe a Lelit PL41 TEMD, single boiler with PID so no temp surfing. $1100 new, so well under that second hand.
Or maybe a La Pavoni for something left field and an experience. You could buy new for just above your budget. Probably not the machine for a couple of quick coffees before work until you got practised at it.

What about something different like a flair. That way they both have a place in your rotation

Again, the Gaggia Classic will happily fill that role....!

Apologies, I didn't really convey what I meant clearly. I'm planning to upgrade to something expensive, Italian and shiny in the next year or so and don't expect the Breville to live long enough to be the back up machine for when the new toy goes in for regular servicing, hence the fairly high price range as I'd like something that will be robust enough to do long term back up duties.

Just grab a good-ol Gaggia Classic (used and looked after). They are everywhere!

So you want to buy a better machine as your back up? What you're saying sounds a little contradictory, making it hard to suggest something

I guess I don't really see my long term future being Breville, so this is also a chance to try out something different which I'd be able to potentially keep as a long term '2nd' machine.Originally posted by 338 View PostTom if you like your BES920 why don't you just buy another if you are will to spend $1k? Harvey Norman have them on special in black for $999 till mid month.
You will always have one for spares or to test the other out. It will just be like owning an old Jag, you need two so one is always on the road.

WTB - Cheap machine for backup sub $1000 (BNE)
Hi All,
My BES920 needs to go in for a warranty job and I've been told to expect at least a 4 week turnaround from when I drop off, so I'm hoping to get my hands on something that won't break the bank but will keep the family happily caffeinated.
Prefer 58mm group so I can keep using my accessories, however open to other options if they come with a tamper.
Make 2-4 double shots each morning, mostly in milk drinks.
Looking to spend somewhere between $500 - $1000.
Cheers,
Tom
